Ring ACAS for advice. The number’s at the bottom of the check list.
Could you arrange to meet the other renters after work one evening, show them the HMRC info. and agree to talk to the salon owner together and insist that she follows the guidelines.
Trying to make it appear to clients that you’re all employed by the salon is a very bad idea. If she was investigated by HMRC, they could decide that she’s set up a sham employment situation and she’d be prosecuted, fined and required to repay an amount that they determined was lost wages to her self employed staff. She’s being very naive if she thinks they don’t investigate small businesses. Lots of hairdressing and beauty salons were investigated and prosecuted last year.
Also, if all the monies go through her till, she risks hitting the VAT threshold and having the salon pay vat on everything. That would also negatively impact the self employed renters.
Fact is, you’re all independent business owners. You should be running your own promotions and price lists and clients should be made aware that you’re separate to the salon.
