Company name-advice please!

Hi everybody

Does anyone know how to find out if your chosen business name has been used already?

I have been told that you must be careful not to steal someone elses name (intentionally or not) as you could get sued! Copyright or something.

I would be grateful for any advice on this

To see if someone has a limited company name in the UK already, you can use the companies house web site, Companies House

I'd also check if it's being used in America too. We've just had to change our company name as it was also used by a Biotechnology company in the states. They didn't threaten to sue us, just politely asked what our intention was. As it turned out they were actually still happy for us to use our old name, as long as we in no way link ourselves to them. We changed it anyway, just to be safe!
