i have a client coming in this week with a lot of loose curls in her hair, she wants it layered.

i just wanted to ask, if i just layer it as i would with all other clients (long graduation) will this look ok on curly hair?

i've been told curly hair can have a pyramid effect, which i want to avoid, but is this an effect of layering or an effect of curly hair cut to one length?

how do u avoid the pyramid effect?

Hi , I would say its an effect of layering too short and too much around the middle of the cut and then carrying the cut on right through to the ends of the hair which resuts in a rounded hat look which is straggly at the ends
is this what you mean ?

with any long or curly hair I like to separate the bottom part of it first
so I have a set amount of thickness that I wantto keep at the very bottom which I leave alone and dont cut into,

I may tidy this if it is needed later but not now ,
I leave this alone so it wont look stringy and unbalanced ,

then I measure the top peices allowing for curl bounce and measure out where it will end up when cut,

I layer the top sections first bringing it right up vertical and slant my cut up towards the ceiling ,
you can relax the V shape accordingly as to how she wants it
then at the mid sections I usually bring it out in a more relaxed V

I don't take any off going towards the ends of this mid section until
I have let it all fall and then pulling it right up and out again to join it into the very bottom section taking minimal off the layers here at the ends
so that its more like just joining the mid section in with the bottom section
and hardly taking anything off the ends

I hope that made sense , as I am not that good at describing
I can see it in my mind but can't seem to write it down any better for you ,

I think if you leave out enough thickness you want at the bottom of the hairstyle so it wont be wispy ,
and don't cut too much off the middle layers , keep bringing it out and upwards when cutting it should all be good ,

but if she comes in and it is unbalanced to start with
and there are skinny wisps at the ends and looks like a round hat on the top and sides
then you may have to just tidy the top layers for her it up for her and tell her to let the mid sections grow down into the bottom section so you can re balance it all for her in the future

Ps If it looks like a good shape already and its not wispy , you can just follow the cut again ,

But ......if you are not too sure though, I would leave it to someone who has more experience with longer curly hair  hth

like minky says, u dont want to take to much weight out by over layering the hair. . especially between like ear and jaw level. . . i always find it helpful to comb the hair so all the knots are out while its soaking, and then towel dry it a bit and put it in its parting and really wiggle it with ur finger to get as much as its natural fall back into it as u can. . figure out how much u want to take of of ur shortest layer and pinch it. pull it taught so i can see where i wwant it to be cut to both str8 and curly. . .
i think even when hair isnt curly and long layers are needed, over direction is the key. . u really want to angle ur fingers up at quite an angle and be pulling hair away from the head when u want to distribute the weight low down in the cut. .
once u have cut in ur guide, do that shaky thing again and make sure it is where u want it, then for every few sections continue to do this so u can see how it is all sitting. . .
i also found it very helpful when i was training to be shown that u shud never cut through the centre of a curl where possible, cut at the point where one curls ends and another begins, if u cut it throo its middle it tends to stick out funny when dry. . i thought this sounded freakishly pedantic, but it did give a better finish. .

i hope my ramblings was of some help LOL x
