Differences between L&P and gels?

I have a friends mum calling me today... she has had acrylics for years, but now her daughter has her nails done by me and she likes them so much she is going to call me to discuss this. However she has had acrylics for years and never gels. I am unsure whether it will be extensions or french overlays, but from what was said by my friend sounds like overlays. The question asked was whats the difference between the 2? Now I have said that both acrylics and gels are strong but gels are more flexible. Her daughter then said she didn't really understand and to tell her mum all about it... lol. Would love some advice...
