I was looking for the articles but I can't find them amd a lot of the Google info is aimed at consumers and I just want to check a few things if you don't mind helping.
I am trained in makeup and lashes and eye treatments and recently have gone back to college to do VRQ Beauty Therapy because I want to specialise in skincare and get a foundation knowledge before going on to specialise rather than doing day courses. I wasnt interested in nails at all before but I am quite enjoying it and would like to offer a gel polish as I know they're popular and longer lasting than regular polish. I know that I need to do further training into gel extensions but have been told my mani certificate will be enough for gel polish. I wanted to ask pros for their opinion and if you can point me in the direction of more information? I am trying to gather more info and getting a but confused! My knowledge is pretty limited so far and I want to understand what I am doing.

Is there an article link which breaks down what they all are and the required training, I.e gelish, shellac, vinylux?

To purchase from sweet squared you have to show your manicure certificate...you could then purchase shellac and vinylux...but you won't be able to purchase gels or l&p without certification in them both...gelish I think you just show manicure certificate but I'm not 100% sure
Make sure your insurance covers you too x

Thanks. Are they the main brands so I can go away and research what they are?

There are many brands of gel polish/power polish
CND Shellac (power polish)
Gelish
Jessica
IBD
OPI
ASP
I'm sure some other geeks may be able to list some others too they're the first I could think of...to me shellac and gelish are the main 2 brands that people mention when asking for a gel polish but that may be where I live every place is different too

HI,
good you're looking into gel polishes, you won't regret. If you only want to use gel polishes it isn't necessary to do a gel extensions course. A manicure certificate is sufficient, but I would highly recommend to do a gel polish course.

gelish and shellac are the two bestknown brands, also here on salon geek.
Gelish is a gel polish, it lasts 3 weeks (or longer). Because it's a gel polish you have to remove the shine from the nail plate with a buffer (gently). Than you use foundation 1 minute cure, colors two minutes cure each layer and top it off 2 minutes cures. Most gelish colors need three coats for coverage. Removes within 15 minutes with aceton or the special gelish remover (kinder for the nails) but you have to file the top it off layer open so the remover can penetrate better. Within 15 minutes it comes off like a dream. For extra strongness for weaker or damaged or ridged nails you can use the gelish structure gel underneath the gelish color or over the gelish color, (20 minutes removal)
You can cure gelish with every 36 watt uv lamp or the harmony led lamp

Shellac is a hybrid polish, lasts two weeks (or longer) on healty nails. Brisa lite smoothing gel is the powerpartner for shellac if the clients have weaker, damaged or ridged nails. Shellac removes very easy within 8 minutes with the nourishing remover or plain aceton. But the nourishing remover is kinder for the nails because it contains oils. Brisa lite with shellac removes within 15 minutes, also very easily. The diffrence with gelish is that with shellac you dont have to remove the shine from the nailplate and the basecoat only has to cure for 10 secs. With removal you dont have to file the toplayer open. Three plusses for shellac!

If you choose for shellac, you have to use the cnd shellac lamp for optimal curing. But you can also can cure the gelish with the shellac lamp. There are plans that cnd is coming out with a led lamp this year.

Vinylux is a one week polish without the need of a basecoat. It doesn't have to cure in a special lamp but just apply it like regular polish. The shine of the topcoat is fab!! And the topcoat hardens over time in daylight, so you can get 7 days wear with a mirror finish. (on healthy nails).

:wink2:Hope that helps

Nvc (and others) thanks so much for taking the time to post, it makes it much clearer. I think I'd like to start with a vinylux style polish and then go on to do the training in either shellac or gelish-to learn about the lamp etc.

Thanks a lot!
