Hey Geeks,

At the mo I'm working as a nail tech in a beauty salon,I've been there the last 2 years..

Only downside is my boss just wants me sticking to nail extensions, manis and pedis, where I'd love to offer nail art, minx etc as I've done courses in these..

I was thinking of becoming mobile but last week I was giving the option of renting a nail bar in a very popular hair salon near to where I live, also rent is very reasonable and I'd be my own boss,

Any advice or tips on the subject would be greatly appreciated, pros, cons etc..

Cheers

can you not just do your other treatments mobile if clients want them and work from the hair salon?

Yes s'pose I could never thought about that, thanks

No probs. I was mobile for a year and i found it very very difficult to build up a decent clientelle. I then took a beauty room on last year within a hairdressers and I've found im doing much much better (when i say much much better i mean im taking 4 and 5 times what i was taking being mobile)

I would take on the offer within the hair salon and also do mobile work. Best of both worlds and that way your not missing any opportunities

Def rent the nail bar.

I used to be mobile then took on a beauty room in a busy salon. I made so much more and stopped advertising!

Mobiles tough, you can't fit as many treatments in and you have to advertise a lot more.

Besides, if it doesn't work out with renting you could just take your new clients and go mobile.

Thanks redchick,I've decided to take the risk and rent the nail bar..also do you offer anything else apart from nails?

Urm... I've got a confession, I don't actually do nails. So hope ur ok wiv me putting in my 2 pennies worth.

I purely do semi-permanent eyelash extensions, been doing it just over 2 years now. Started off doing it in my spare time whilst working in an office. Then rented a room in a salon, built that up, gave that clientelle to my sister. Rented another room and opened my own salon last October, yeah!

I know I wouldn't have achieved this so quickly if I'd stayed mobile. There's only so many clients you can do in a day, and you can't do as many when you're mobile.

Thinking back to the first room I rented I got a good deal. First month rent free, then 30% after that. I was so busy after the first month that I decided I'd rather rent the room and not do a percentage.

Speak to the salon. Say you're worried about taking on the desk, is there anyway you could do a percentage just for the first month. That way you're only paying when you're earning, and it's less scary starting up. Haggle, haggle, haggle, it's a recession :wink2:

I did lashes half price when I started in the second salon. Some sort of discount will get u ur customers, and I'm sure you'll keep them.

Good luck, you're doing the right thing x

Hey, pls let me know how it goes, or if I can be of any help.
