According to new research from professional hair brand Fudge, British men discover their signature hairstyle at aged 32 years and six months. On average, a British man will try five different styles before setting on his signature hairstyle which he will then keep; compared to an average of seven attempts that it takes a woman.

Hair icons such as Mick Jagger, David Bowie, Rod Stewart, George Clooney, Michael Douglas and Sir Bobby Charlton would agree. All of them have stuck religiously to their famous hairstyles since they were 32. And fans of celebs such as Ryan Gosling, Jake Gyllenhaall and Justin Timberlake can relax - it's likely these handsome boys will keep their beautiful barnets for the foreseeable future.

When asked about their reasons for deciding on a signature style, 65 per cent of men admitted that it was down to speed and convenience whilst over one in five (21 per cent) said a signature hairstyle must reflect their personality. An eager to please ten per cent of men admitted that they settled on their signature hairstyle because their wife or partner liked it.

And don't think for a second that men aren't swayed by celebrity trend-setters. Only one per cent of blokes want their hairstyle to be different to everyone else's! A fifth of men asked admitted that they wanted to grow their hair longer to emulate the slicked back styles sported by David Beckham and Bradley Cooper.

Unsurprisingly, George Clooney tops the list of most-wanted barnets with almost two thirds of British men (63 per cent) preferring to go grey than recede. In fact, going grey has become a fashion choice for some men with one in ten considering dying their hair grey to keep up with fashion trends. In fact, six per cent have gone ahead a done it.

Despite celebrity influence, some men march to the beat of their own drum when it comes to their hairstyle. Showing that personality can count above cut, almost a quarter of Brits (24 per cent) think that Boris Johnson’s signature blonde mop shouldn’t work yet does, and almost one fifth (17 per cent) think that in principle Bradley Wiggin’s sideburns shouldn’t work but he makes them cool.

John Vial creative director at Fudge comments: “There is a common misconception about men that they are not influenced by hair trends yet these findings show that British men make a significant number of attempts in finding their signature style, just two less than the average woman. A hairstyle that reflects their personality is clearly a priority for the modern man.”

“What’s great to see is the influence that men are taking from greying celebrities and embracing their inner ‘Silver Fox’. The fact that people are requesting to be made grey just cements that this is a style set to stay.”

There's no doubt boys are thinking about their barnets more than ever.

Until then...geek on!
