How do I get my hair from black to chocolate brown?

hi,ive currently got my hair black,its been this colour for ages,i want to change it to more of a chocolate brown,what would be the best way to acheive this? could i get the colour i wanted by colouring it or would i be better growing the black colour out before attempting to get it lighter? :!:

You would need to either colour remove with a suitable remover or bleach bath. You can only do this IF there is no pre-lightened hair underneath the black.

You would need to only bring it up to the orangey stage, this way you won't need to pre-pig, plenty of porosity spray and then pop on your target shade.
Make sure you pick a colour with warmth, and a a little base of your target shade. Either use a quasi or 3% with your permanent for longevity.
