I hope this question has not already been asked, I did a search but could not find the answer. I was curious as to how you would go about doing a rebalance on a client who changes the color in Zone 1 everytime without using an e-file when using gels. I have read the tutorials and understand how to do it when using POW. However, you need to remove all the old color or you will see it underneath the new color.

I currently use an e-file and trench out the new smile line and remove all the old color and fill that way but it takes me forever. I do not get the new smile line even and spend way more time filing the new smile line to even it out than needed. The last training course I attended, the instructor told us that you must remove all product in Zone 1 everytime you rebalance. This was different than my original training and I must admit, I do not feel comfortable filing to natural nail when trenching out a smile line so I do apply a clear layer of gel first and when I rebalance, I go to that layer. I do remove all product at the free edge. I can do a new set far quicker than a rebalance.

I know there are many people on here that do not use an e-file and are very successful hand filing. How do you do rebalances with color or even white gel (not POW) in Zone 1 without carving a trench? Hope I have made sense.

I have clients who have colour in zone 1 in gel...and change it every 3-4 weeks....and i don't own a efile.

I always do a layer of clear before the colour...so when rebalance comes i just file off the colour down the clear and carry on as normal....its no different to using POW...only the POW is colour gel instead of white.

Thanks. That is what I thought but the comment stuck in my head that all product must be removed in Zone 1 and I could not wrap my thinking around how to do that by hand filing. I also have the fear that I will make the enhancement to thick. Years ago (when I was the client), I had my nails done by a girl who hand filed. They were the worst nails I have ever seen. They were so thick I could not pick anything up and instead of nicely shaped apexes, I had what I would describe as mountain peaks on my fingers. To make matters worse, it was just prior to my starting my own training. Needless to say, they were use in class training as an example of how you do not want your enhancements to look.

Sounds like the problem there was using too much product, not because she hand filed.

Nails will only be as thick as you make them and the amount of product you use....its nothing to do with whether you hand file or use a efile.

Hi Rikki, I take its a buff off gel you use? I'm quite new to gel but have been doing L & P for a while, I must say doing lots of filing is my pet hate lol I'm using calgel which is a soak off (the reason I choose it :green:) if my clients want a clour change I dont have much filing to do, and if its a lighter colour I soak off. I know your question was about filing but just thought I'd add this incase it was of any interest to you xx
