Hey guys

The other night, I decided to fill in an application for a job on the Steiner cruise ship, thinking that I probably wouldn't get past the application process. So I was suprised that within 12 hours I had an email inviting me to an interview at the end of this month.

Now, while I can't actually afford to get to the interview right now (its about 8hrs drive from me), I would like to attend a later one (they mentioned that this is possible in the email). So, I would like to begin preparing and researching what I can do to be offered a position.

Has anyone here done nail tech work on a cruise ship?
What level of skill is expected at the interview? I think I heard something about training, so if you aren't 100% up to scratch, would they possibly hire you and give you a bit more training?
If I get a job on there, do you think they would offer a position to my fiance too, like just as a bum boy or something?

well done.

i remember reading a thread in a different section on here which mentions about this.....partners or friends i believe will be placed on a different ship to you. for some reason they dont allow same ships.

ive also read that they train you anyway, so it'll be to their standards.

ive spoken to other people who have worked on cruise ships, as i was thinking of doing this myself...its very very long hours..12+ hours each day, i also think its commisioned based, so if you want big money, theres alot of selling involved.

i would personally hold off until the credit crunch is over. cruises are a luxury, which tbh not alot of people can afford at the moment in the current financial situation. but of course that is just my opinion.

hope this helps xx

One thing to keep in mind is that Steiner is not a cruise ship itself - it's a company that trains and places workers on various cruise ships.

I've seen lots of threads on this board about Steiner, including one just this past week, so just run a search and I'm sure you'll find lots of info.

Good luck! It's something I would have done in my younger days!

you could still do it if you wanted to seraphine x

Thanks for the info so far guys, Ill do a wee search later (as I should be doing dishes right now )

Aww that sucks that they wouldnt put my partner on the same ship, its not that we would want to be immature about it and get up to mischief etc, its just that I don't want to be apart for that long, and it would be cool to just still be able to have dinner together and stuff like that.

I am not worried about the hours, I love nails so much that I could do it 24/7 if my body allowed me!

Does anyone know the chances of getting a job if you get the interview? I know it depends how the interview goes, but I mean, do they pretty much interview hundreds of people and only a few get a job? Or is it quite likely? I just dont want to get too disappointed lol.

I doubt I could fit my 3 year old son and my big, fat pregnant self into one of those cabins! Plus my husband might find it a bit inconvenient for me to take off for 9 months a year.

But, still... I'm all for adventure! Just these days, I'd rather save up and go on a cruise that work on one :)

Maybe one day, when my kids are grown. But the time commitment isn't something I want to take up right now. When I was younger, I didn't have so many obligations and would have quite happily taken up a post like this. Instead, I moved from Canada to the UK and built a life here. I'm on my 3rd career, not including parenthood, and things are just about where I want them to be.

But I'd love to encourage people to take a chance when they can... you never know where it will take you!

My son is training with Styner, (well home for a week or so if you search my posts you will be able to see) After your interview, you will be given a pack if successfull on what will happen next, crb checks, visa, costs etc.

You will be required to do a trade test and presentation at the interview, my son was told the same day (he is a barber) Emma his friend is also training too and she is fitness.

You have to have £1000 saved to cover your expenses for medicals, maritime fee, uniform, flight tax. etc.

The training acadamy is at Harrow, the students stay at the YMCA at Watford and are there from all over the world. It is extremely hard work, long hours, but the training is excellent for product knowledge, customer service skills and your chosen profession.

You are not allowed to be on the same ship as your girlfriend/boyfriend/partner/friend on your first ship, but can request on 2nd ship. Best wishes. xx:hug:

I worked with Steiner in 1990 - 1991 as a hairdresser. I worked on two ships. Each contract was for seven months then. I went to London to train with them for 5 weeks. The interview was a trade test and was pretty much straight forward. We stayed in a youth hostel in Kensington and travelled into Euston Station where they had their training school. They trained us to their standard, and you had to learn all about their products, hair and beauty. They were very strict on appearance on hygeine and appearance, which is a good thing. The money was rubbish, but tips were fantastic, and you had to pay for everything up front. The hours were very long, but as I was 19 then I could burn the candles at both ends. Other than that the ships were fantastic. The night life was second to none and the people were lovely. The opportunity to travel and see the world is fantastic. Way up the pros and cons of doing it. The contracts are quite long, and I missed my parents and friends, would you? But then again it's only 9months and a great opportunity.
Sorry its long but hope it helps xx

Thanks guys for the advice, looks like ill have to get saving :)
