Just started renting in hairdressers, advice needed please

Hi,

I have recently started renting in a hairdressers. I'm a beauty therapist and had a few existing clients from my last salon but not enough to make this work without new clients.

There is another room here that they are looking to rent to a nail tech. I don't do extensions but do offer gel polish.
The new tech interested in room does gel polish too and I'm really worried about the overlap of services as I am still struggling to build my clientele.

It feels unfair to me. Do I have any rights here to say the new renter cannot offer same treatment as me?
 
Have you signed a contract/lease. Did contract or boss mention the additional nail tech ? If not then you can argue unfair, damaging to your business if an overlap of services maybe?

I know nothing about nails/beauty other than you don't need to be worrying about competing with beautician in next room. It's business at end of day and if an overlap generally one will do better than other. If it were me I would be finding a suitable premises where your business with thrive being ONLY therapist in the salon.

I wouldnt jump to conclusions just yet, this new therapist may have her own client base, talk to your boss and see if she listens to your concerns, you should get first option for gel manicures 4 sure, perhaps you can work together to grow both your businesses if the other girl does nail extensions, you may even learn some tips and tricks from her, don't fight change, nothing works better than being challenged to build up a client base in my experience .
 
The Salon owner needs to make all the space they have pay, otherwise they're losing money.
So you're not likely to be successful trying to argue against them renting space to a Nail Tech.

You could find out what brand of gel the other tech uses. If she uses a generic 'ebay' brand such as Bluesky, you can market your services as using Professional only/superior brands.

Regardless, chances are there's a nail tech a few doors down from you anyway, so you're always going to be competing with someone offering a similar nails related service. I think the downside to offering nail treatments as a beautician is you still need to purchase a few new colours each season to keep up with the trends but if nails is just a small part of your business, you might not finish some of the bottles before they go off. Waste = throwing money away!

Personally, I think you'd be more successful if you specialised in a niche area and become known for being the 'go to' salon for that treatment? Intimate waxing is a great service to offer as clients have to regularly return for a re-do and you're not spending lots of money on stock sitting idle.

There's always going to be competition around the corner, so you need to be on your toes thinking of ways to market your services more successfully than the next guy.
