Hi,
I have a male booked in this week for a facial i havent done one on a male for a few years, anyone got any tips or techniques that may be helpful?
thanks

Hiya Sue - Axiom is the real expert on mens skin care so hopefully he will see this thread soon but here is a few pointers meanwhile.

Dont use cotton wool on mens skin as you tend to get bits of fluff on any beard growth so use sponges as they will be more effective.

Although you need to chose the right products for individuals skin as you would for a female please take into account the smell of some facial products may be a little too feminine for some men.

Mens skin does tend to be a little thicker than womens so you need to take that into account with the products and massage too.

I am sure there will be loads more tips from fellow skin care professional too but good luck and let us know how it goes.

Hello!
I do quite a few men's facials, plus my own(!), and one of the main tips is indeed to avoid cotton wool as it gets stuck in the beard growth. That aside the main problems with men's skin are often shaving related, such as redness, irritation & resulting dryness. Men's skin is also a lot thicker & tends to produce more sebum (often resulting in blackheads). You'll probably find you'll need to concentrate on the exfoliation, it would probably be worth steaming the skin, and I normally replace the hand massage with a foot massage or scalp massage. You might also like to introduce the use of hot towels at the end to remove the mask as it helps to leave them feeling clean & oil free. Good luck!

I always ask my chappy to have a shave the day before because the stubble hurts my hands when i am performing the massage - ouch

Thanks for all your advice the facial went really well and the removal of the mask with the hot towels worked a treat!
I used vinyl gloves for the massage as it is more comfortable on the stubble and doesnt hurt your hands. Thanks again dont know what i would do without this forum sometimes!

Glad the facial went well, and that the hot towels worked for you! I use them in every facial to remove the mask, and they're very popular; it's such a nice way to end the treatment, much nicer than wiping over & over with sponges!

If your client is new to facials then I would suggest a good dose of education as well.
A few men I've had for facials come in because their g/fs or spouses book the apt for them, so they are very nervous and confused about what's going on. It's a nice touch to explain what you are doing and why (as this type of client probably wont relax anyway, so it's ok to talk, I find it puts them at ease). It can also boost your retail sales!
