Hello everyone,

Im very excited to start on my new venture in the beauty industry!

I have started eyelash extensions and yesterday started my manicure NVQ L2!

I didn't realise just how hard it is to paint nails! I know it takes practice but if anyone has any tips on how to make it easy e.g. positioning of hands/balance or anything else you think may be of help it would be much appreciated!

Im practicing on my boyfriend tonight....pink i think :) hehe

Thanks,

Welcome to the beauty industry! You won't regret it!
Painting nails can be tricky to start with, especially if you are only used to doing your own. I find this helps, and feels comfortable:

If you are right handed - Hold the clients' finger (either side of the nail) between the thumb and forefinger of your left hand, with your palm facing up. Hold your polish brush in your other hand. Stick both your little fingers out and rest the right one on top of the left when painting.
Simply reverse if you're left handed.

Sorry it sounds more complicated than it is. You are basically using your little finger to steady yourself. I was taught this on my NVQ and it works.

Good luck painting xxx

Same as above really. Hold the finger you are painting and with your thumb and forefinger gently pull the nail folds down and away from the sides of the nail to allow more nail to be painted and not get any on the skin. Balance with the little finger method, looks a little odd but it really does help make you steady!

I also use the push and pull method when applying polish, apply the polish in the centre of the nail and gently push towards the eponychium (base of the nail) and pull down to the free edge, then do the same but curve out towards the right and pull down and then to the left.

Remember to do thin coats and always do two leaving plenty of time for each layer to dry. A little streaking on your first layer isn't a bad thing!

Hope your boyfriend enjoys his polish!

My trial run on my boyfriend went much better but no where near perfect, although the pink suited him haha!!

It just feels so awkward to balance! i suppose the more i do it, the easier it will become!

Another question i hope you can help with (and thanks for all guidance so far i really do appreciate it)... cuticle oil and cuticle remover...

i have been taught to use cuticle oil first thing and then soak the hank but i found cuticle remover in my kit and it threw it slightly....

in what circumstances do you use cuticle remover and the same with cuticle oil?

Thanks again xxxx

Umm, now I may be wrong but the way I have been taught in my NVQ is to soak the nails, apply cuticle cream on and soak a little more, then use cuticle remover and do cuticle work. I apply 'cuticle oil' at the end of the treatment and after polish etc.

All my products are from my Skin Truth college pack.

Geeks, is there a better way to do it? Am I getting it wrong?

Really the less time that the hands/ nails / feet are in water the better , dry manicures or oil based are much more beneficial , but as it was explained to me (might be wrong here )
Here in Europe we/clients don't feel as though we have had a full luxury mani or pedi unless we have been soaked lol
So for a Spa mani
Take care of any cuticle or hang nails ,
File and shape the nails ,
(shellac if I'm doing that)
Then if needed apply a moister pack (like your putting oil on before soaking) to protect the nail and surrounding skin from absorbing to much water .
Then I soak only the nails and finger tips in an oil / milk bath
Exfoliate,
Hand masque
Massage
Ect.....

Sounds lovely mizzy_dizzy, wish I lived in the Isle of Wight, I'd be coming and having a manicure every week!

We were told only to soak the hands/nails a little just to soften them, I never keep them in too long tbh. Wish I had the clients to practice on, but have now officially finished my course, just waiting for the certificate - not long until I go mobile!!

i imagine your bf was delighted! :D the things our other halfs put up with eh? mine often has a set of lashes applied and today he's having his first ever spray tan (he seems to think come monday when he's at work that he isn't gonna look like he's 'just come back from holiday'! oh little does he know! :D)

i have no advice to give, i just wanted to wish you good luck on your nvq! all these professionals make everything look so easy don't they? i guess that's the result of many years experience and plenty of practise! x

i agree with :: Claire :: ! sounds lush! x

Hi,

I always use cuticle remover after soaking the nails and only apply cuticle oil after the nail polish has dried :) If you use it befor applying polish you will have problems with the nail polish !
Good on your BF,I spend 6 months training and during that time my man had mani's/pedi's/acrylic nails and gel nails :) A man that loves you will cope with it :)
