Hi everyone and happy new year.

I have for the past couple of years been visiting two old ladies in an old peoples home to reshape and varnish their nails and shape and tint their eyebrows. I met the warden yesterday and she has asked if I would be interested in going in 1 morning a week to give treatments to other residents in the home, they are all mainly women, the youngest starting at 55.

She suggested manicures, pedicures and facials. I have been considering it thinking that paraffin wax treatments would be perfect for them as part of their treatment plan, however, this may seem a silly question but where do I draw the line regarding massage, I don't want to do anything to damage their skin?

Also any suggestions on how to adapt the usual manicure/pedicure and facial to suit the elderly?

Many thanks in advance.

Hi
Instead of using the paraffin wax - which could get a bit messy and will take time to melt, how about using heated mittens and booties? I much prefere these as the heat stays all throughout the treatment.

You could maye do mini facials as where they are older their skin will be thinner/ not as taught and the whole extraction part may be too much for them.

As for adapting the usual mani / pedi I would keep them the same just be careful with removing hard skin on the feet as most care homes etc will have a chiropedist that comes in.

Regarding massage how about just offering single areas?
like, foot & lower leg, hand & forearm, Indian head massage, back neck & shoulder, 20 mins each.

How about Indian head Massage as well?

You could print up a page of treatments, (maybe with descriptions) you can offer them then they can choose what they like.
Here are some ideas;

NAILS & FEET
Mani refresh- cut, file, and varnish nails
Manicure- cut, file, cuticle work, massage, and varnish
Heavenly hands - file nails, moisturise hands followed
by heated mittens
Pedi refresh - cut, file, and varnish toes
Pedicure - cut, file, cuticle work, massage, and varnish
Tired tootsies - file toes, moisturise feet
followed by heated booties

MASSAGE
Foot & leg - 20 mins
Hands & forearm - 20 mins
Indian head Massage - 20 mins
Back neck and shoulder - 20 mins

FACIALS
Mini facial
aromatherapy - includes massage & mask

EYE TREATMENTS
Eyebrow tidy - (using what you use wax/ tweezers)
Eyebrow tint
Eyelash tint

That is just a sample there might be some treatments you dont want on there or some you will want to add.

Hope this helps you

Hi Emma,

Many thanks, your response was really helpful. I was just a little concerned on the massage side of things with the elderly, however i will adapt this to suit the age and skin of the client.

Unfortunately I am not yet trained in any holistic treatments but this is something I am looking to learn later this year.

Good idea for the heated boots & mitts, they didn't even go through my mind, I was just thinking of the paraffin wax treatment being helpful for arthritic joints etc.

Thanks once again and have a good year.

Your very welcome Sharon,
The heated mittens and booties will be a god send, I find them better than parrafin wax as you have consistent heat, and a lot less messy!!
Look around at different companys prices on them I think salon serve do buy on pair get the second half price! (dont quote me on it though)

with the elderly I am usually more concerned with massage and affecting their blood pressure, etc... and a lot of them tend to like less pressure. As well have more sensitive skin, so I watch what products I use on them for the massage. They would love paraffin! (as long as they are not sensitive to the heat). I use the heated booties and let them caontrol the heat button.
