Does anyone else have problems with staff always being ill? Is this a nail industry thing?

sounds more like a poor staff thing to me!!! :) Is it a particular member of staff or more than one?!

Maby they are not ventilating the work stations properly. Overexposure can cause all kinds of strange symptoms. It says in the encyclopedia of nails that it can cause sickness, headeaches, dizziness and fainting, fatigue and resparitary problems. I am not for one minuite saying you dont vebtialte the salon correctly bit if they are leaning in to their monemar etc all day maby they are overexposing with out realising just a thaught xxxxxxx

Hi theres no much information on your profile about what you do what systems you use etc.

I see that you have a few posts all regarding staff management, are you new to this side of the business ?

It's a staff thing. Mine are not exposed to nail stuff, and I spend lots of my time covering "tummy bugs".
I am beginning to think some of them eat out of dustbins.

make them all self employed then if they dont work they dont get paid.

And make thruppence a week, and have them all scooting off home at 3? no thanks.

yeah its a staff thing next time you give out pay rises introduce an attendance bonus and slap it on that!!!!

i have an attendance bonus and don't pay sick pay (only statutory) it doesn't have to be much obviously you have to give them what their entitled to so min wage + attendance bonus which could include pay rise

they loose it if they are off a day ill or even have a days hols and if they are late for work more than twice in one week.
this my seem harsh but ive worked in a salon where staff have obviously been skiving and the boss does f all about it... it really gets to ya when you never skiv yourself cus yeah im such an angel and never have... so what im saying is that its nice to reward your staff who do turn into work on time every day

just see them all flock to work..... lol

These threads that you're posting sound very much like the sort of questions you need to answer on a course?!

Can you fill out your profile a bit please Lynlyn

The bottom line is that staff have a duty to attend work
Of course someone may have an underlying medical complaint but employers can take action where staff are regularly off work
Typically 5 absences a year is cause for concern
To cut a long story short you basically counsel them, check there isnt an underlying medical complaint and then ask for an immediate improvement
Certainly the staff who are regularly absent for one or two days can be taken painlessly through the disciplinary procedure

Thanks so much for the advice.
This is really helpful. I wish I joined months ago.

I went to a lot of expense in kitting out the salon with all the right fans etc. I sometimes feel that my staff expect everything and give nothing back.

i would introduce back to work interviews, where they have to tell you why they have been off and any medication they may have been given by the docters! i think the thought of having to explain them selfs to you every time they have a sick day might make them think twice about taking time off every time they get a little sniffle or a twinge in their tummy... incentives are always good to discourage this sort of thing as well, maybe a bonus for someone who has had no sick days for a few months!
