The City of Santa Monica has collaborated with Cute Nails to launch the Healthy Nail Salon programme. The city says that it is "devoted to supporting healthier and safer practices" and they hope that the initiative will improve salon conditions for clients and employees.

The programme aims "to reward nail salons that make safer choices for their employees and the environment" and mayor, Pam O'Connor launched it last week. Mayor pro ten Terry O'Day explained, "Santa Monica is excited to launch a Healthy Nail Salon Programme - recognising nail salons in our city that use healthier products and maintain healthy indoor air quality. Conscious customers will be able to find the services they want, salon workers will breathe easier and fewer toxins will enter our environment."

The programme was launched in order to tackle the large number of salons that are still using the "Toxic Trio". Everyday use of toluene, dibutyl phthalate and formaldehyde is still rife and city staff say that nail workers are regularly exposed.

"Studies of nail technicians suggest an elevated prevalence of work-related heath effects including respiratory symptoms, skin problems, headaches, as compared to the general population."

In order for salons to be part of the Healthy Nail Salon Programme they must conform to a specific set of strict requirements "that reduce exposure to these chemicals and improve other health and safety measures" e.g. use nitrile gloves, improve ventilation and educate all staff on health and safety info. The city will provide free resources to those salons wishing to improve.

"This programme is a win-win for all of us," says Karl Bruskotter from the Office of Sustainability and The Environment. "The Santa Monica Healthy Nail Salon programme will create healthier and safer workplace environments for both workers and consumers who visit Santa Monica's nail salons and for salons, will help bring more customers to patronise their businesses."

Until then...geek on!
