Hi I have natural nails and don't have the money for enhancements, now since I started VTCT course and people have been practicing on me my nails are in a state, they are broken and peeling along the free edge and some have broken across the nail plate just above the free edge.

Now I was asking my tutor last night and she said enhancements were the way to go, now I'm not happy with that as the cost involved with rebalances are too much at the moment, is there another option that would give me a little time to help the natural nail grow back I keep my nails very short so I'm thinking a month or so will see them back to normal.

Would a gel overlay help?

You could have a gel over lay
or a silk wrap over lay
or a fabric wrap over lay
the silk or fibre glass would probably be best for you as they wouldn't need filing off like the gel would,
all 3 would protect your nails while they grow the damage out hth

Agreed. When I was in nail school we practiced on each other and every day we had to do acrylics or gels and soak or file off that night and come back in the next day with clean nails. This made my nails as thin as tissue paper. I actually did a nylon wrap on myself and it gave my nails strength and protected them allowing them to grow out and when they needed to come off they soaked off fairly quickly.

I use a wrap of some kind. I agree that silk or other fine mesh will do less harm than good. Consistent attention is the key. Keep your glue and file handy. Repair as soon as possible when issues arise. If you had good nails to start with you will have good nails again. Time takes time.
