Hi I am completely new to this site. Can anybody please give me some advise. I am setting up a room at home for Beauty Therapy and will also be able to do mobile appointments.

I have purchased most of the basic furniture and products i.e, beauty couch, susan molyneux facial products, jessica nails, eyelash kits etc. Can anybody think of other products and equipment I may need and also advise me on insurance. Is the insurance offered by the Beauty Guild adequate or do I need more insurances?

Can someone also advise of other issues about being self employed, taxes etc and is a website recommended?

Apart from having my electrical equipment PAT tested, do I have any other Health and Safety requirements to meet?

I am so sorry this request is so long!! Even if you can just advise me a few issues I would be grateful!!! :wink2:

Hi, extremely long list. I will respond with info I can share with you: -
  • Check with Council regarding the conversion of a room at home
  • Inform your household insurers (buildings and contents) of the business activity at home; increased risk (visitors onsite)
  • Risk Assessments and a Health & Safety policy will be required as visitors coming to a Salon (whether it is High Street or Home based); access to the Home thru to Salon needs to be kept clear of hazard (cables/ slip and trip areas/ concerns)
  • The furniture could possibly be insured via your household insurers, leaving you left to arrange Freelance insurance for Public Liability/ Treatment Risk, Stock and Equipment (& Money)
  • If you want stock/ equipment/ Money etc insured as an extension to the Public Liability/ Treatment Risk, these must be insured at the same time
Please refe following HSE link for Hairdressers/ Risk Assessments to help.
Example risk assessment: hairdressing salon: case study

With regard to the Freelance cover, check out the following (premiums start from £36.50)

Good luck

Thank you for your advise - will follow the links!!
