If you've not been to the States before you need to know about tipping!
Restaurants you are expected to tip, about double the tax is a good tip. In bars it is custom to tip with each round of drinks you buy, just leave a dollar bill on the bar. Don't worry, the barman who served you will know the tip is from you - even if they don't collect it straight away, often they can be left on the bar for a while.
Some people can get a bit outraged about tipping bar staff, you are looking at $1 (50p) for an average round - since its just the two of you that will be fine. But what this means is that you get great service, have a soft drink with your round and it will be topped up / refilled free of charge. If you are sat at the bar quite often without you having to ask. Also if you are drinking cocktails and any bar will do them, some even have margarittas on tap they are that common, you will notice that as you tip they can become stronger (the joys of free-pouring and not using jiggers) or they will use a better quality alcohol on future rounds. We've been in bars before and just given the barman $5 / $10 with the first round to cover the next few rounds, "we'll be here for a few" to so they know and they will keep coming back to look after you.
If you like good clothes definately get along to Abercrombie & Fitch, they often have a topless male model on the main door on 8th avenue to have photos taken with (but there may be a queue). Americal Eagle is very similar to A&F but is cheaper! If you want really good 'basics', t-shirts, jeans, tops etc then a stop at Old Navy is a must. This is the same company as GAP, but is cheaper.
You definately have to do a coffee and donut / pretzel from a corner seller, new yorkers live by these guys on the way to work all the time.
If there is a game on while your out there i'd try a Baseball game at the Yankee's stadium - we loved it the first time we went.
To give you an idea of what we get up and views etc the following are some of my photo albums from trips:
Halloween 2006 - New York
New York (2002)
New York (1999)
If you have friends or family here you can wave to them on Webcam too! If you go to TimesSquare there is a webcam there (
Times Square Cam - EarthCam) it is by TGI Fridays, there is a small electronics store with some payphones by it. There are often people hanging around on the phone waving at no-one. The viewers can then save the pics of you to e-mail to you as well.
