Hi all,

Hoping some of you may be able to give me your opinions on the following...

I currently work self employed as a semi permanent make up artist. I have worked really hard and built it up to a level that I am making a good living however I am one of those really annoying people that always has to be learning something new..! I don't have formal beauty training although did nails and hair when I left school (years and years ago!) then Kim lawless waxing etc. I have always been drawn to the more surgical/invasive/aesthetic treatments and my decision now is whether or not to go back to college and do my nvq level 2 and 3 for a solid base so I can move towards those treatments.

I was wondering how may of you offer these kinds of treatments? By that I mean skin peels, derma roller, laser treatments etc. also how expensive is the product/machine out lay/ training and how popular do you find them?

Also I'm assuming you have to be level 3 qualified to progress on to this training?

Sorry for gabbling on!!! Any advice would be much appreciated!

Lucy xx

Hi Lucy,

Sorry I'm not the person to give you an answer of what you've asked but want to go down the exact route you are.

I've done beauty NVQ 2 but want to know as your a Semi-Permanent make-up artist as this is what I want to learn, would you be able to tell me how long you've been doing it? And has it taken a long time to build up gaining customers to create a regular income? Do you work part-time or full-time doing this?

Sorry for all the questions, I'm just keen for some advice as I would like to do this and once I've got a good income from it would like to carry on and specialise in more aesthetic treatments.

Thanks [emoji4]

Hi,

I terms of spmu Iv been going a year. I have always had a bit of an arty flair so picked it up very well but on top of that I have worked my arse off! I do it part time around my very young family but I definitely make the equivalent of most people's full time wage. I would say the only way you know is to try. It's a big gamble but if you work hard enough I think you will make it pay off. Xx

Anyone else got any thoughts on the original post??? Come on ladies! I'm terrible at making decision! xx

Hi I'm pretty sure you have to have at least elements of your level 3 although you may not need all of it. If you don't have level 2 either I think you need that first. For example, you can do level 2 and train in skin needling and you can train and get insured with some machines as the training with the machines is deemed enough by some insurance companies but not all. And that is where the heart of it lies. In your insurance.

BABTAC wouldn't insure me with a level 2 qualification to use the environ machine. I didn't need a level 3, I just needed the electrical facial element of it whereas a friend of mine didn't have a level 3 but trained with environ and Caci and her insurance company insured her.

I would contact companies that can help like ipl lease companies - think the machines are in the region of £15000 plus so lease is a viable option - and ask what their criteria is for training and insurance as they will have a good idea.

Thank you for getting back to me and letting me know much appreciated!

Hope you find your answer to your actual post you wanted [emoji4]

You definitely want a level 2 under your belt, although there is a loop hole that if you do SPMU you can get insured for micro needling/peels etc but I doubt that will be for much longer.
We have an aesthetic clinic and beauty salon under 1 roof and our aesthetic clinic is and has always been more popular than beauty, aside from waxing and nails. We have had to take on a second nurse prescriber and she already fills up fast. My understanding is that you will need level 3 at some point. And we continually train to be as advanced as possible so that we are always over qualified as apposed to under.
We also train microneedling, peels, radio frequency with Aestheticare and we are just round the back of Dermace (who I believe you trained with?)

Hi Paige

Yes I did train with dermace down in London. I already do mca/skin needling but definitely want to branch out. Nvqs seems like a daunting prospect and a lot of work but I think if your going to do something, do it properly! It seems to me like a lot of these little loop holes and what not are slowly getting wiped out in an effort to regulate (quite rightly) so I guess there is no point in trying to cut corners.

Paige your clinic sounds awesome. Do you mind me asking how you got to where you are? I know your involved with dermace somehow but would love to know more about the route you took? I find hearing people's stories really motivating!

Thanks also Vic, I appreciate your advice. It's a bit of a minefield with all these different insurance companies and their criteria!!

Ahh we are behind Dermace head office in West Yorkshire. It all started with my grandmother who is a registered nurse prescriber, she offered Botox and fillers initially went back to college to do beauty NVQs, went into aesthetics, became close with lots of practitioner groups and Aestheticare, she trains for them now and all her therapists are trained in radio frequency, IPL, peels, micro needling and micropigmentation. She is now going into mentoring aesthetic practitioners! Aesthetics is a nice industry xx

Wow. That sounds pretty amazing. Iv always been drawn to the more medical treatments rather than the beauty side. I think I have answered my own question really haven't I!! Off I go to do my Nvqs! The only thing that does worry me is that there is so much competition here in Essex, I don't know if it's the same for you up there? Anyway thanks for letting me pick your brains xx

Although there are other aesthetic clinics up here I find it completely different to beauty, clients come for the practitioner not necessarily the brand/treatment. In our area I don't feel like we have any competition. We have just taken on a second nurse practitioner after being flooded with clients who can't get appointments for weeks. It does far better than our beauty.
No problem, any questions just ask. Xx

Hi paige, I know this thread is old but I was wondering if I did the spmu would I be able to train on peels etc? I get confused as to what the level 4 vtct is equvilent too if anything? Ha
