Hi

I am currently doing NVQ Level 2 in Beauty Therapy. I am going to an open day at college regarding which paths to take in March. I am currently on client sessions for treatments so there is a way to go yet. Deep down I guess I want to go mobile but am really scared of it. I didnt know whether to do NVQ Level 3 Beauty which is more electrical facials etc or Nail Technology Level 2 and then I would start in January with nails asi have mani and pedi certificate. I look at nails and think wow I would love to do that (with time of course as I am a bit of a perfectionist :Scared:).

I just want opinions really. I already work full time and hope to do beauty therapy and nails if I go onto do it mobile part time too and balance it out.

I dont know if I want to work in a salon but I know that you get a lot of experience but its getting a job in a salon in the first place without experience. Am I the master of my own destiny and could I go mobile without having worked in a salon? Scary thought. I am totally willing to spend money on extra courses too like the CND ones along with the nail course. This is what is swaying me at the moment. I may have answered my own question here but thanks for reading and I will let you know how it goes after I have been to the open day. Just to add, I could do makeup level 3 but I am better at applying it to myself rather than other people. Is this practice too?

Thanks

:biggrin::p

I cant really advise you hun as it has to be your decision. I think you need to be really passionate about somthing to make it work, I would sit down and think about where you would like to be in 2 years time, do you want your own business or do you want to work for someone??? Then I would look at what would help you get to where you want to be by thouroughly researching every aspect ...hope that helps a little!?:eek:

Level 3 beauty is a great way to go especially for the massage qualification. As far as nails go , personally I would go for the specialised courses rathernthan the college course. Acrylics are so popular within the Discount salons that it's tough competition.

I trained as a beauty therapist to nvq3 and also did the nail technicians course, I later went on to train in biosculpture gels. Training with a specific company gives you so much more insight into their product, and clients are more likely to go for a brand that's well known.

As far as going mobile, it's hard! I worked in a busy salon for 4 years and have been doing mobile for the last 7 months, even with taking my clients I had built up and getting busier all the time through word of mouth, I could never imagine going straight to mobile from college. it takes longer than you think to become a real expert in your treatments.

Hope some of that helps!!

hello! Im starting my NVQ 2 soon myself so no expert but Im like u i wanna be self employed eventually. So, if I were you I would probably do my NVQ L3 and then specialize in whatever after that... only so that u have all options open! If u say for example go mobile and at some point its not going so well and u wish to be an employee, YOU CAN! This is just my opinion though and i think it would be good to gain some experience from a salon/spa first. Having said all that, i might be wrong and u may be off just fine going mobile straight away! :D also, even if u did go mobile and did NVQ3 , you would have even more treatments to offer so its not like a waste even if u did L3 and went mobile straight after either.. hope im making sense! hope u find whats best for u! good luck!

I'm just finishing my level 2 starting my level 3 sept am doing eyelash extension already going to start hair extension in the near future. I'm going to try and get work exp in my local salon but u really wanna go mobile as I have a baby x

Thanks all for your replies. I think I am swayed more to do level 3 at college and maybe do a shellac or gelish course while doing level 3 which sounds better and maybe do volunteering at a local salon to get experience. Snyggiss - you are right too as level 3 won't be a waste, its only more strings to my bow. It's really helped me as I now know that its a lifelong career and that you never stop learning anyway!!!! Thanks again
