Overlays..Thick or thin?

i trained with bio sculpture, and my overlays arent lasting longer than 2 weeks... So are overlays suppose to be thin or thick because i never no which one to go for!? Are you suppose to seal the last layer of gel so they dont lift, really thick so there stuck on there or just a quick sweap over the free edge??
