Im undesided if i should play music through my stero or have a flat screen TV in the salon with the music channels on.

I was wondering do you need a PRS licence and a TV licence if I was to use the music channels on the TV?

Yes, you'll need a TV licence because you'll be watching a broadcast transmission to choose the music channels.

... Don't forget you also need a PPL licence, as well as PRS, to listen to music

i might just be a wee bit tight but i really hate paying license fees, rates,vat,best pisser offerer ever was a £200 a year lift and stairwell maintence fee paid to the chartered surveyer employed buy my landlords who just for the record a group of kuwait buisness men (seriously rich)when we didnt even have a lift or stairs or access to any there was a lift however in barclays bank in the same row of buildings which we were all paying for said lift had never broken down now thats some clear profit for the landlords from 16 small buisness owners its hard enough as it is to make any small buisness work without any tom **** or harry ptting there hand hand out to releive yo of some of your hard earnt that youve probably shed a couple of private tears over especially when there is a bloody recession and staff have to be paid etc and what do we get out of this paying for bits of paper nothing f##k all but some pompous bast##d gets a duck house and moat and a bit of pay per veiw porn

srry went on a bit then and a bit off subject but yes you will need ppl and prs and telly licence and probably there are a few more related licences you could collect does anyone know if you play music through your computer from your hard drive,downloaded legally is there still a licence applicable

Yes, you still need all the licences. You even need them if you have 'music on hold' for your telephone!

In the past the PRS even tried to fine a lady for signing in a shop, but they backed down in the end:D

how about an i pod docking station wth tracks bought from itunes,apple must have to pay prs an amount surely you dont have to have a licence for listening to your i pod loop hole anyone im determined to find one!!!! :twisted:

I'm afraid there's no loopholes. If somebody can hear music in your salon (clients or staff) you need the licences

i use a ipod and needed a both licenses in the salon, am in the process of moving the business to work from home, so called both companies, prs said i dont need a license from them if i work from a room in my house, ppl i will need their license. i dont think you can even sing to the clients without a license - mind you in my case no bad thing am tone deaf!!!!

Two things;

- PPL & PRS collect money on behalf of musicians. Yes it is for some large pop acts - but they also distribute money to smaller struggling artists too. Think of it this way - if you worked as a songwriter, recording artist or publisher - would you expect to work for free?

- if being in business was easy - everyone would be doing it!! :) I still have the choice of going to get a job if I wanted to - but so far I'm happy where I am.
