Hi, I have recently started to build up my clientèle, I do acrylic, shellac and all kinds of nail art, I am going to sort my insurance out so that's one less thing to worry about, I just need to know what comes along with being self employed.

I am so confused about all the legal stuff that goes along with self employment, I don't know where to start with it all, is there anyone that can put it into simple terms step-by-step please?

Thank you :)

You need to contact HMRC and register for self employment, this should really be from the point you started trading. You can do this by phone or via the website.

https://www.gov.uk/working-for-yourself/what-you-need-to-do

You should record all your outgoings (expenditure) and income. Keep all your receipts that relate to business activities and record your mileage (you can't claim from home to a salon but you can claim for mobile work - you didn't say which). You should include travel for attending training and going to the wholesalers. All of this can be recorded on a very basic Excel spreadsheet or instead WHSmith sell very simple, easy to use books that have all the key sections for you to fill in.

You don't need to have a separate business bank account but it can simplify things and they generally have very slightly better interest rates.

There's lots of information on the net. Try -

I see you're in Liverpool, there's free support for start ups with the following-
Blue Orchid - http://www.blueorchid.co.uk
The Women's Org - http://www.thewomensorganisation.org.uk
Liverpool Vision - http://www.liverpoolvisionbusinessgrowth.co.uk/business-support-programme/

Also, depending on your age you can get support from MYST http://mymyst.co.uk and The Prince's Trust.

Hope this helps!

Thank you so much! This is the best information I've had! Made it so much easier :)
I can relax and sort myself out now hahaha :) amazing! :) xx

Are you planning working from home or will you be mobile?

If you work from home you are liable for business rates unless you work from a room which is also used for another purpose. ie I work from my living room.

Try and do your book work at least monthly as its a pain when you find you've 6 months to catch up on!

Small business rate relief should mean a discount of 100%.

I use an accountant to do my end of year accounts and they also set up everything I needed such as registering my business and NI pmts when I started.
I'd rather know that everything is done right and it means I dont have to worry. (It's usually a few hundred pounds each year to do this depending on how much work they have to do ... I'm lucky as my cousins husband is an accountant.. Happy days ) .... I don't have to do anything apart from keep records of pmts & treatments and receipts of what iv spent.
The accountants bill can also be offset from your total expenditure.
Hope this helps.

I am home Base but if I have local clients I go to them if it's easier for them, I'm hoping my boyfriend could help out with all the book work haha he's good with that type of stuff (luckily enough) haha thank you everyone I feel so much better about it, I just didn't know where to start with it all everything g seems so confusing hahaha xx

I have not started yet, just practising on mine and my mums nails. But when i do go mobile it will be a second job, how does that work??
