Hello im wondering if anyone can help,

I have been looking to become a Beauty therapist for the passed 3 years but i am not having any luck what so ever, i know that going to college is the best thing but i have a serious hang up about going to college and have had since leaving school.

Im just looking for some advice on how else i can get the ball rolling with this i have looked at beauty courses from independant companys and found one i was interested in but it was £2000,00 and lasted about 3 weeks as a intensive course and i didnt know if it was possible to become a fully qualified beauty therapist after having just 3 weeks learning everything you need to know ?

Also i have looked at home learning courses but again i didnt know if i would be enployable with the qualifications you get from home courses and with not having the practical experience ?

To be honist with you i am just looking for som advice on if there is anything else i can do a part from go to college, if i could do a home learning course ? if a 3 week entensive course would qualify me.

Any help would be appreciated,
Thanks Ashleigh x

Hi Ashleigh, I went to college for 3 years full time I dont regret it but I wouldnt do it again.

Would you not think about taking short courses or what I would do is train in waxing, spray tanning, nails etc all seperate you will find brilliant trainers on here kim is your woman for waxing , collin for spray tanning I know there are others on here too who are fab with the training. These would vary in price but dont think you would be near the 3k mark plus you could take your time do one course save up for another.

Sorry for the short answer I am on my mobile I hate typing on it prefer the computer lol.

Thats okay i know what its like when your on the phone emails seem to take forever but thank you for your reply :)

To be honist i have never thought about doing the courses sepratly but that does sound like a good idea, i know that price made me feel sick but i was just so desprate to get into beauty that i was really thinking of paying it.

Thanks again for your reply and i will have a look on here for the names you mentioned and give them a quick email about thier courses.

Thanks Ashleigh x

Hi there

Definitely do your training one course at a time. Get confident in that training before trying to take on board another skill.

Some courses require a lot more practice than others ie acrylic/gel nails, eyelash extensions etc.

Good luck and enjoy!

Before taking any courses, you should check that you can get insurance for that qualification. With most home learning courses, you will need to complete a practical element to gain insurance.

Please be very careful about doing a home study course. My experiences have shown there not held in high regard by potential employers and please note that most of them require a practical element which isnt always stated on the training providers website.

I did a open study college beauty therapy course and was advised at the time of signing up that id be fully qualifed if i did training at a local salon for 2 days. The guild advised this would not be insurable. Also the course was priced at £300 and they subsequently informed me that the practical training held in Portmouth is £500 for 2 days.

I did get my money back but the time spent on the entire course was a waste and the certificate was useless.

Lesson learnt. If you want to do beauty do it the proper way. Either college or private insitutions that are guild accredited.

Its best not to take shortcuts. Our training is priceless if we want to be the best at what we do.

Good luck.

I think i am deffinatly going to forget about the home learning course and as a matter of fact i actually think that the home learning course you done is the one that i have been looking at from open study college beauty therapy diploma course, and i have been put off by them to be honist as i have sent 3 emails and had no reply, Thank you for informing me about that course because i was so close to enrolling on this course but now i am going to look at doing seprate courses i have been looking at some today via the essex school of beauty so fingerscrossed that i can get the ball rolling with this :)

i just had to post on here! we are so alike!

i completed level 1 of college and was into level 2 when i had to leave due to pregnancy now 4years have passed and i have 2 babies 1 who is 4 and 1 who is 1 and for the past year i have been thinking of doing something, anything that's for ME - just to give me some kinda of identity that isn't just 'mummy'. i thought about doing beauty and maybe hair and for the past month all i have done literally every day is trawl these forums, email companys about courses and prices, check out the beauty guild to see if courses will enable me to get insurace, research what's popular now and what is always popular - just basically not rush into anything and find out as much as i can. i am so much wiser now than 1 month ago and that's JUST 1 month of researching.

i posted, like you about what would be best to do and after reading the replies and going over money i decided to go to college, it's free whilst i'mnot living with my partner right now (he works full time) so i thought i'd do the college course - i'd save money, network and make new friends in the process. so that was what i was going to do untill i came across a problem - the promblem was i didn't want to leave my youngest (oldest will be in reception come september so he's not aproblem) with some random childcare provider and my partners work hours aren't flexible enough to enable me to attend a full time college course and i don't want to have to wait till he changes job, my youngest gets older etc etc i want to get started doing something now.

so that left me with the dilema of private nvq or individual courses - i've decided to do the individual courses. i can do them in my own time and choose what i want to do so that i can compliment any other treatments i offer. everything then is on MY terms. it's easier to pay up to £500 for individual courses rather than paying up to £2000 all at once for level 2 (level 3 is even more expensive of course) and then having to buy products on top of that (of course you will have your starter kit, but it's completely basic) for the brand you want to use and marketing etc etc and to be honest, if i want to work for myself (i had such a bad experience of work experience when i was at high school even though it was absolute years ago i wouldn't ever want to work for somebody else) then why do i need an nvq2 or 3? so long as you can get insurance and you are competent in what you are doing and follow all health and safety to the t and act in a professional and ethical maner then what's the problem? you're no different to a level 2 or 3 in my opinion and from what research i have done, appart from that's what salon owners want but for me that's not a worry. i guess though if you want to work in a salon the the decision might already be made for you.

my advice to you would be to research research research, email/phone companys - don't be afraid to ask questions and send them as many emails/phone them up as may times as you want, when pricing up things don't forget to add on vat (not like i've done that or anything! duh!) and go through how much/many products you get in the training start packs, what marketing you get/how much and compare it don't just go for the cheapest price out right as just because it's cheaper to start doesn't mean it's going to be cheaper in the long run reguarding product/marketing costs.

Hi

I have done my nail tech course in a week intensive course - it is an information overload snd you do have to go back over your manuals and practice, practice, practice before being about to charge paying clients.

There's a college near me that does 2 evenings a week 6-9 for 34 weeks to obtain NVQ level 2 beauty therapy, also includes putting together your own portfolio and assessments. It would work with the children.

I wouldn't advise home studying as you wont see where you are going wrong and wont have troubleshooting help
