Just a quick question.

Basically I rent space in a hair salon and we share the same overall name. How much can I do without the owner of the salon having the right to stop me, for example there have been issues raised about a Facebook page I have which the Salon owner believes may damage the 'image' of the shop and be a detriment to the professional image of the salon (i disagree as it is clear the information and pics i put on there relate to nails and not hair), also there have been issues regarding the look of the shelf I have to store my products (my nail varnish brand and the way i have displayed my items), sounds petty but it has caused a few serious discussions.

I work for myself but as said previously share the same salon name, in my opinion it is a separate business but do i have to adhere to the regulations and if not - how do i fight my corner without causing bad feeling amongst us both.

sorry for being vague, don't want to write too much incase this is read by those who i'd rather not read it!

Branding is a very serious issue and what you describe isn't petty at all but a situation I've witnessed more than once.

Essentially, the person who owns or has vested interests in the business name calls the shots. So when you say "sharing" do you mean, for example, that you're a joint registrar in the business name, a licensee or have you been permitted to use the name while renting a space on the premises?

It's difficult for two businesses to operate as separate entities while using the same name and roof as there tends to be too much room for confusion. What you may think is brilliant marketing may spell disaster for the owner and vice versa. This is something that is usually addressed at the outset of the business relationship when you sign the lease agreement etc. If these creative differences are surfacing then it may well be time to consider a new business name, agreement or renting elsewhere.

Thanks for your reply, it was very informative. We share the same name an this was her request, we are also friends which brings another problem into the equation, but having read through your post, I realise she is right to protect the 'image' of the salon. Tricky situation though.

Thanks again

Would you not be able to share the salon name, but add nails or hair to the end, for e.g. if the salon name is Heavenly, could you not call you part Heavenly Nails, or Nails at Heavenly, of course I don't know what your salon is called so this may not work, but you get the idea?

well it is kind of, i'm unique Nails and they are Unique Hair, its supposed to be separate businesses but it kinda feels like i am limited and restricted sometimes as everything i do has to be scrutinised in case it tarnishes the salon image!

Which i totally understand but..... *banging head against brick wall*
