Hello, I'm a beauty therapist who's just opened up my own salon 7 weeks ago and have had a lot of interest in false nails which i'm not qualified in and don't have much experience of. I've got a nail technician interested who i want on a self employed basis but as i've very little experience in this field i've no idea on what to charge her. Either a % per set or a charge per week and how much?? The salon is outside Edinburgh so my prices are fairly competitive/cheap and not city centre rates. Don't want to ask a ridiculously high amount but want to make enough for the space! Any ideas anyone??

From my experience, self-employment is a lot easier if you just rent out the space for a set amount per week. If you take commission you will have to supply her materials and that calls into question the whole basis of her employment under you, which could also make insurance sticky. Have you called around to see how much booth rental is in salons in your area? That would probably be a good place to start.

you could offer her a set rate per day or a cheaper rate for the week, then you will have the benefit of a regular income coming in, and if she/he is self employed, then they will try to do as many clients as possible to make their own wage.

I would suggest you get a contract drawn up, and do a trial which you could ask them to go after 3 months.

hi irent a space in a hairdresseres now just nails and eye treatments and im a beauty therapist but no space for any other treatments, and i pay £100 a week and i can do any hours i like within the hours of the salon and and any days that they are open. I find that i t is very flexible for me and i still make a good proffit on working just the 3 days out of the 5 hths xx

I agree. From your point of view it will be much less hassle to rent the room out for a fixed fee, that way the tech will be self employed, responsible for her own marketing, buying her own materials etc. For what it;s worth I rent a room that's not a city centre/prime location and I pay £50 per week. Utility bills and business rates are included in that but only because it;s a shared area, if it was a self contained room I would have to pay extra for those too, and I pay my own insurance, phonebill etc. Hope that helps :green:

I would just ask her to pay a set amount of rent each week...
I rent a space in a hair salon... I buy my own prodcuts and I can also change my days to suit my life style, kids etc... (although i do have set days as clients like that).
I wash and use my own towels etc.
My advice is make sure she knows what is expected of her.. ie.. cleaning area and uniform etc.. there is nothing worse than a slobby, dusty area in your nice clean salon.
Communication is the key and talk about things each week so that nothing goes un noticed and build tension.
Good luck... you will like the extra income.
Having a nail tech in the salon will also attract those clients who want to save a little time.... My clients have their colours put on while they have their nails done...rinse and blow dry and out the door.. they get 2 services in the same time frame.
