Oh dear..sounds like this is a case of lack of confidence thats all...it takes a while to realy gain full confidence in what you do and learning by your mistakes is a sure way of becoming a spray tan expert.
It seems from your description that you are applying to much solution if it is to wet.
As has already been sugested....turn your gun right down, fill with water and spray a couch roll hung from the door.
Whilst spraying turn the dial open and closed so you get the feel for the gun.
Apply the "less is more" thinking...different companies and solutions have different amounts of solution they recommend as the optimum amount to get that even all over tan result ..as a general guide try and achieve around 35ml per full body.
It is natural and quiet normal to over spray in the early stages of what you are doing...trust in the liquid you are using and turn that dial down.
it is far better to under spray than it is to overspray...you can always "top up" a tan that you have perhaps not applied sufficient solution.
If you have already turned the gun down to its lowest setting and you are still getting to much solution on the skin then you may have to speed up your movement to compensate.
Give it time, practise on as many family and friends that you can get hold of ....all will be well in time.
Just take your time
