Spray tanning question

I've been doing tanning for years but this question suddenly popped into my head today! Once we've sprayed the client, the DHA develops over 8-10hrs but what 'activates' this to make it start developing? Why doesn't it develop when it's in the bottle before it's sprayed on??

It reacts with the amino acids on the skin I believe x

Off the top of my head - doesnt it need to react with something in your skin...
