I am almost finished doing my Foundation course with CND. When I booked it I thought it would be beneficial to do the Brisa Gel add on and so booked and paid for both. The problem is, I live in a small town which only had 4 beauty salons offering nails and 1 mobile technician (who is due to have a baby in July!!) and so I thought business wouldn't be too bad to set up mobile. But, a few weeks ago a nail salon opened right in the centre of town, it is run by an oriental lady and her partner, they do all styles and can do a full set of L&P overlays in 30 mins!!!!!! And everyone in town is raving about them, now I was all set for some competition, but they are just knocking everyone else out of the water, they offer nice looking nails, quick and cheap!!! Now because I am just starting out, I'm worried that i have put all my eggs in one basket by only doing extensions and am thinking that maybe I should try to cancel the Brisa course and use the money to offer something different. I have a little extra money I can put into it and am now thinking that maybe I should look at doing a spray tanning course (only 2 of the salons and the other mobile tech offer this), minx (no one in a 50 mile radius does this) and when it arrives Shellac!!! I am already booked in to do CND Manicure and Pedicure in May.

Do you think I would be better doing the second option and diversifying slightly whilst offering on trend products that no one else has?!?!?

Thanks

Heya, if this is a new salon, how do the people know how the nails last infill after infill or if they are getting damaged nails? If they do them that quickly are you sure its not NSS xxxx Oh and definatly offer minx, it is not available to anyone except with a CND account xxxxx

In my experience the salons do not compete with mobile work. I was mobile for years and never had any problems when the cheaper salons opened. Some of my clients mentioned that their friends or sisters had gone to them but it is the convenience of visiting them that they like. It is not always possible for some people to travel to a salon and find childcare etc to do so! ;)

Well for the little I know (as i'm a newbie and still at college), I honestly don't know anyone who can do a full set of nails in 30 minutes. The girl who did mine, use to be like a whirlwind but that took her at least an hour. Usually 1 hour and 15.

Also, I doubt very much that their nails are up to the same standard and wouldn't last very long. They might have a lot of clients in now, but I bet you within 3 months, everyone will go back to their original Nail Tech once the novelty and their nails has fallen off! Lol.

I think you should stick to your original plan hun, but that is just my personal opinion.

I have no idea what the cancellation policy is but I would expect that you would lose some of your payment depending on how close to the start of the course you are so I would carry on with your gel training and add the Minx, Shellac, Tanning etc when you can - it will give you skills and treatments that the other salon doesnt have - and as you said, you can offer the new on-trend services that clients are excited about. Don't let this new salon put you off. You can compete in a different way by offering a great service and the latest products. And its definately worth getting to grips with Minx before the summer rush on toes starts! Good luck :)
