Hey everyone! any help and advice would be greatly appreciated,
Im hoping to set up from home after not being in the industry for 3 years (mainly due to a bad experience with a former employer which put me off beauty for a while and knocked me confidence a bit!) I am nvq level 2&3 trained, also trained in a few product houses like Clarins etc. I kept my hand in a bit by doing treatments on family/friends.However ive lost touch with whats new in the industry, where would I find out about new systems such as whats popular for waxing equipment and nail treatments/nail art techniques, products, events, training? Is it worth subscribing to the guild magazine?
I would also like to retrain in acrylic nails as I havnt done this since college, whats my best option for this? Spray tanning is also what I would like to do a course in what would you recommend, and are most courses such as the short courses recognised as a valid qualification for use on paying clients.
Sorry for the long winded essay!

The Guild magazine is a good place to start and there is a lot of help on this site. For nails I would recommend Young Nails and there is training available in Manchester with Clare Kelly. You can find information of courses on their website. Training can be flexible according to your needs which can be discussed with Clare or with head office in Blackpool. The products are really great and easy to use and the prices are very competitive.

Welcome back to the industry, I am sure you will do very well. :)

hi there, im in exactly the same position as you . im starting my business from home in couple of weeks . like you i have been working on family and friends over last 3 years as i gave up work after having my daughter and wanted to spend some time with her . . i am doing a lot of research on the net . i only found this site by accident last week and by going through al the threads i have gathered sooo much info and help from others . so il be interested also on the replies you get . i was thinking also of doing gel or acrylic re training . was thinking of star nail have you heard of them?

Yeah Shar in answer to your question I have heard of Star Nails and just after my training I remember purchasing their acrylic kit, at the time I didnt rate it very highley,I preferred what we trained in at college which was an american company called pinnacle?!
Alot of the geeks seem to be recommending CND creative nails,
I actually think it would be a good idea to find out when the next Beauty show is on, because like others have said its where new products are showcased and where you can find info about training.
Did you have to get permission from the council for setting up at home Shar thats what ive heard x

OOOH I was thinking of doing spray tan training , who have you decided to go with and did you have the training or just bought the equipment? just spoke to a family member who been a bit negative about the whole thing saying theres no point paying for new courses and buying all the products when havnt got any clients

ooooh i wouldn aggree with that . you will definately have to invest something or training . wat if you have the clients and dont have the expertise?? i went with la tan . www.latanning.co.uk. they have fab offer on at the mo . i used to do airbrush tan wit st tropez couple years back so didn train wit these guys as i know the basics . im just gaetting used to the machine by trial n error.

Hi lei been reading ur last response and just wanted to say u need to listen to positive people when u want to start up a business as u need encouragement. Do u have any equipment from ur previous job?

I'm opening a hair salon tomorrow and I am fed up listening to people saying its a bad time to start a business.

Just ignore any negative comments, and remind them of what they said when you have a successful business!! Clients like to know you are keeping up to date with training, and once you get one client you will get their friend, their mum, people they work with...and soon you will be so busy.

If you are positive, then everyone else should be.

Good luck :D x

Kimi u said it better. Good luck to you and remember when u make money in a resession just think what u cud do when it picks up because that rise is a certainty

Youre quite right girls, and good luck to you kimi:smack:
Yes have got all the basic equipment couch,wax-pot, eyelash/brow tinting, its just alot of expense when you have to buy all the products for facials etc, what do you think of smilegems?
Hay any girls here that are your own boss got any tips for advertising and promoting business? My mind just goes blank! someone did suggest taking leaflets into sunbed shops/hairdressers

:lol:eve taylor is a very good skin care range and they don,t have a minimum order as far as i remember

great and do eve taylor do body treatments too? And what would you suggest starting up for mani pedi range on a med budget ?? xx:hug:

Just spoke to a family member who been a bit negative about the whole thing saying theres no point paying for new courses and buying all the products when havnt got any clients

How did they imagine you were going to treat the clients without products & the knowledge to apply their related techniques?!

Negative thinking from those who don't even work in the industry has no value whatsoever, and certainly doesn't constitute an informed opinion. You know the industry as you've done it before, and you know that a business needs investment in it before others will be enticed to use it's services. If you have the enthusiasm & the means then go for it!

Pretty much all of us on here are making our living from this industry. It may be a bad time to begin a property development business, but a beauty room is pretty low risk!
You really should visit the Olympia show for inspiration and an indusrty update.
