Hi, anyone else done their tax return online? This is my first one and i thought id register to do it online as it supposed to be easier? However ive got to page 2 and im completely lost already!!

It doesnt seem to me to be very user friendly for someone who is doing this for the first time!

I cant afford an accountant at all so have to do it myself.
Does anyone have any tips where i can get useful info asap that explains things like the terminology of the whole tax return thing in simple language!!

when you are doing it hun , theres little question marks over the boxes if you click em they explain what that specific box is for , hth
i do mine online and find it a lot easier than the paper one for some reason:D

hi, ive been having a go at starting it today but have got all confused! Im writing a list of all the q's im not sure of now and am gonna ring the I.R.
I have 13 weeks left until my baby is due as well so am suffering from 'cheesegrater brains' at the mo (which means i dont know what im doing half the time! lol). So thats not helping, but i thought if i could either get most or all of the tax return done before i have the baby then its one less thing for me to worry about..

good luck hun! got my first one today (tax return) and even though my youngest baby is 18 months i still have mush for brains, can concentrate at work but get home and i'm on mummy mode. Think i will do it online too but have only got as far as opening the envelope!

Have you enquired at your local inland rev. for a one day course on how to fill it in?
I enquired about it when I first went self employed, although I had to do a one day course on what I could claim for first ,Im just waiting for a date to come through for how to do my s.a. on line..and its all free too.

the first year I did it I actually went into the IR and someone sat with me and we did it on paper, we worked out the figures and she pointed which box to put it in. It was really, really helpful.

the next 2 years I registered to do it online and got myself in a right old state with it.

I have luckily found a fab accountant who specialises in sole traders, and I take all my completed excel sheets, p60's (cos i do some employed work too) and he does it for me. The best thing is, if I got a query from IR, I refer it straight to the accountant who will deal with it on my behalf.

It cost me under £100 to fill the tax return in, which was worth every single penny and got peace of mind.

the more you can do yourself, the cheaper it is, and they work on how much time they have to spend on it.

I found it quite confusing to ;)

I think I must of called them up on every page ! There wasn't actually that much to fill in but I just found lots of the questions didn't make sense (in my mind anyway!)

I am going to tackle mine soon, best thing to do is allocate a morning to get all your paperwork in order then start to slowly fill it in ! Seriously though I really did call them all the time and it helped me loads.

Like Hippy Chick I also have an accountant who does it all for me.

His wife is a book keeper so between them they sort out all the horrible paperwork aspects of the job. I've only been getting the book keeping done for the last 2 years & it is worth every single penny. My only regret is that I didn't get it done years ago.

Yes it does cost for the book keeper BUT, think about how much time is spent doing it yourself. In that time you could do enough treatments to pay for their labour.
