Hi

Whats the best way to get rid of tension nodules.

My boyfriend has loads in his back. I've been giving him a couple of massages a week and been working the nodules but its been that long since i done my massage class at college I cant remember all the ways we were taught.

In the middle of moving so all my notes are boxed up.

Thanks
:)

I tend to start by doing my usual effleurage and petrissage movements. Then I use deeper petrissage in the area of any nodules. Knuckling in those specific areas is effective using a circular motion andyou can use just one finger to knuckle for smaller nodules. I then continue with the rest of my massage moves to complete the area.

Once you've warmed the area up you can use deep transverse & static frictions/pressures to break the knot down (within client's comfort level - if the pain gets worse rather than stays the same/reduces, then release the pressure), and then longitudinal stroking to stretch & realign the fibres.

One thing I was taught was to initially work immediately around the nodule rather than directly on it a this can sometimes be too painful. But as others have said always warm the area first.
