As some of you may already know, I've now officially changed my name by deed poll to Mrs Ruth Donna Mills, and am working towards living and working as Ruth full time.

However, one issue I still need to work on is my hair. I've unfortunately already got a fairly high forehead due to (in my opinion) one of the most objectionable effects of testosterone; so far I have tried to get around this by wearing bandanas and headscarves. However, it's not always appropriate to wear these, e.g. when dressing fairly formally to work in an office; yet, at the same time, I do need some means of covering up my high hair line, or at least making it less obvious.

So, I was wondering if any hair geeks had experience of dealing with transgender clients, or otherwise with dealing with this particular issue.

Any help would be most appreciated

Hi Ruth!!
Congrats on the official name change finally!
You must feel so much better for it?

I have a few transgender clients that have a very similar problem to yours (i also have non trans gender clients with the same issues with hairlines)

Very often my clients want alot of length left etc as they feel its more feminine, however this can essentuate the issue alot.

My most fave client ever (trans gender) has very fine hair on the top section of the head and a very high uneven hairline at the front. She used to be adamant that her hair was kept long, but we have gradually taken the length up (suits her much more)and added alot of texture to the hair. This has allowed me to create a soft side fringe that just softens up the front area really well without making it look obvious we are trying to cover it up.

Do you go to a regular hairdresser that you could maybe ask for a litle extra time to sit and look through dome mags/hair books with?

I did this with my client and really spent the time gaining her trust and confidence before we did it all in stages.

Hair is a very personal thing to females and can change the way you feel in an instant so its really important its done well.

Good luck and its a shame im not closer,id love to do it for you.

xx

Thanks Crazybek! Yep, I feel *loads* better finally being officially called Ruth! Took me a while to get confident enough to do so, but finally got there!

That may be part of my current problem then, as my hair *is* rather long at the moment! So saying, I was debating whether it would be possible to make some sort of hair-piece with my own hair (the excess length when chopped off to make it shorter), or is that rather over-complicated? Would almost certainly be the best bet in terms of getting a hair-piece to look as unobtrusive as possible, I guess...

I have been to a salon run by one of the other geeks (about 30 odd miles away, so a lot closer than Devon lol), but I think her previous hairdresser may have left; might well be worth having a word with her again; this post was really to ask if anyone specifically had experience with transgender clients that wished to make the best of their own hair though, as I am guessing it's a fairly specialised field... what part of Devon are you in, incidentally? My brother and his husband are down in Exeter, so it might be a possibility to arrange something next time I'm down in the area to visit him, perhaps? I guess really though, the main problem I have at the moment is that I'm not exactly sure what I want at the end of the day with my hair... so it would be more along the lines of finding someone who is happy to spend the time discussing the various options and experimenting to see what works best... so it could even be worth a nice trip down to Devon just to do that (although Sonia and I are well overdue for a nice holiday too lol)...
