I have become a little worried today with regard to my nails/fingertips burning when placed in my uv lamp. I have never had a problem before but as soon as I place my hand under my lamp last night my nails immediately heated up making me withdraw my hand.

I have also noticed that they have been really sensitive to hot water when I ran my son a bath just now. I had a set of gels on for about three weeks and as they were french tipped I decided to replace the set as my nails had grown quite a lot underneath. I was very careful when buffing off the gel and left a very thin layer so I would not file my natural nail plate, but it feels that I have filed my own nails away - when I know I havent!! Could it be the lamp as I cant bear the heat.

Obviously after last nights events I have just given my nails a pearl varnish which covers them so at least they look okay. Has anyone heard of this?????????????

what you are feeling is an exothermic reaction,
as the gel is curing under the lamp the molecules all bounce off each other causing friction and heat, normally you would not feel this, UNLESS, you have damaged nail plates, or very sensitive nail plates, or that you have applied the gel too thickly so the exothermic reaction is more noticable as there is more gel

have you maybe over filed your nails, or applied too much gel in one go?
i think the first to be honest as your nails are sensitive in hot water

There are a number of reasons why gel can give out this heat spike you are talking about...

Gel too thick
Thin natural nails
Wrong lamp for gel

Try doing thinner layers but more of them.....so 4 thin instead of 1 thick..??

This sounds like a heat spike. If the gel is a thicker consistency or applied quite thickly, you get a spike and does it hurt! :irked:

I avoid it buy putting my hand in and out for 3 seconds (being sure your hand is totally out of the pathway of light on the 'out' count) a few times. Then when I put it in, it's fine.

Or you can place your hand not in, but just outside the lamp, where it's getting a little light for about 20 seconds and that works too.

Did you find the pain went away after about 10 seconds? Once it spikes, it usually is fine for the remainder of the 2 min. cure. If it's hurting the entire time, maybe it is something else.

ETA: You guys are way too quick for me!

Thanks for your advice both of you and for the chemical reation explanation, I did not know that, thank you.

I must admit I have been applying gel thicker than I know I used to and I will be extra careful with my gel removal from now on.

Do you think I am best to give my nails a rest for a bit?

I've used the same brand and lamp for about 3 years now and not had a problem till now. Cant imagine not having enhancements on !!!! I'll be sat on my hands all day now !!!!

Thanks again

Thanks Alex,

Does sound like heat spike, but they still feel sore and hot 24 hours later - is that right??? What have I done, aaaaarrrrrrr

When it happen to me it last for a few seconds and does not hurt at all afterward....

My nails have calmed down now and dont hurt as much as they have done for the last day.

Think I might let them recover before I do any work to them !!!

Thank you all for advice - you live and learn, hey!!
