Vertical splitting of nails

I have a friend who has a split nail on his ring finger and I am wanting to know what he can use to help this. He says it has been like that for 15+ years.

This is not an uncommon problem ... I have solved it many times for men and women by just applying an overlay or either L&P or a wrap to make the surface smooth and more attractive.
