Hi everyone, this is my first post and im sorry if its a bit long but im stuck on what to do and could use some advice.

I love all aspects of beauty therapy but waxing is by far my most favourite thing to do and this is a area that I would like to specialize in. The area I live in has massive potential for something like this but what would be my best option to go down this route? I tried getting into college but because I left school without any GCSE's they wouldn't allow me in, tried a couple of years later and I still didn't get in. I tried to get apprenticeships but was told I was too old. The best I managed to get was a 3 month work placement in a fairly new salon but the owner wasn't able to take me on and train me and has since shut down due to having children. Also at that time I went on a 1 day waxing course which trained me to use the Clean & Easy roller system which I didn't rate very much. Then I had a accident which caused injury to my back and left me unable to work but now I am ready to start trying again after 6 years and really want to get into waxing so what would be the best way?

Do I try college again and do 2 years just for the NVQ? Could I do a 1 day accredited course and go from there? Shell out for a 10 week fast track course? I saw a 2 week Elite Waxing NVQ Level 2 with the Carlton Institute which is expensive and far to go but seems like the best option so far. I really don't know what would be best to do so any help and advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks xx

You seem very determined to get into the beauty industry, waxing especially ! This is great. I wouldn't recommend shelling out for a waxing course on its own though. In the long term you would get a lot more waxing clientele if you were a qualified beauty therapist.
When i was training waxing seemed like my favorite too - But once you get into other modules you may find you like them just as much!

Go and get your NVQ ! worth it and you will have a lot more job opportunities in the future.

To be honest (even if i wasn't qualified), I would NEVER get waxed by someone who wasn't a qualified therapist. But that's just my personal opinion.

Once you have the qualification the chances are most of your work will be in waxing anyway - having the qualification will guarantee clients that you have the skills to wax safely and will improve your confidence in the subject

Good luck with everything :green:

Hi Kate and welcome to salon geek:)

Have you ever heard of Kim Lawless training? There are many reviews here about her wax training and it is nothing but positive. You might have to check but I'm nearly sure when you train with her you are qualified to get insured and start waxing!

I've looked into it myself and it really is great value.

If I were you I would start off waxing. You sound very passionate about it so I don't think you will have any problems. Then with the money you earn you could add other courses if you wished or you could just be a wax specialist.

My experience is I started beauty older and took everything on at once and was completely overwhelmed and spent a lot getting everything I needed for everything!

If I could go back I would take one step at a time.xxxx

Go to Kim and do 2 days, 1 speed waxing and 1 intimate. If you are confident you can specialise in intimate and be the best in your area. I do nails, tans and waxing but now specialise in waxing since training with Kim in November and am inundated with clients already by recommendations. I trained later too, I'm 44 now and only trained in the things I wanted to do.

Thank you all for you feedback, it is much appreciated.

I have applied to my local college again and am waiting to hear back for a interview.
I think in the mean time I may do an accredited waxing course and just practice on people until I gain confidence in it and then when I save up enough I can go train with Kim. If I get into college by that time then I may be able to continue waxing while studying or I may be qualified and confident by then have no need for college, who knows :)

I personally would like to do it without going to college but there is a lot of stuff that you learn there that you don't learn on a 1 day wax course, plus you get a NVQ which is always a good thing but to me it seems unnecessary if I want to only do waxing, though If I do get into college then I wouldn't pass up the opportunity.
