What is Shellac & Additives?

Ok I've looked on here and cannot find what I am looking for.
Basically I am assuming shellac is ( in very very basic terms ) a form of light cured laquer ( obviously more complex then that though lol ) and I am assuming that additives are powders? That you can add to create differing shades and or nail art effects?
I know this will probably frustrate people but it's something I have been a little reluctant to ask as I didn't want to get the why don't you know and where have you been response, I have been using NSI up until recently when I did my L&P conversion course in CND, so want to explore all of CND.
