I am looking to have hair extensions fitted in the next couple of weeks so wondered if any geeks can advise me on whats best to ask for as i am not a hair geek.

My hair is quite fine and already quite long so looking for it to look thicker and a little more length. I dont want it to be too heavy and I HATE it when I see badly done extensions where you can see the bonds through natural hair.

so would i be best with a half head? what type and more importantly what type of hair should I ask for? I dont want them to look scraggy after a few weeks and am not very high maintenance so something thats easy to look after. Also I have to have highlights done every 6 weeks will extensions be ok with this?

Also are there any good hair geeks nearby that do extensions i could go to?

thanks in advance.

all you need to do is find a good local hair technician and she can answer all these questions for you and will advise what is best. I'm not local to you but you could ask around or look on gumtree. One good judge is how long they've been practising. Don't mean to say those who have only been doing it a year will be no good but those that have been around a while will usually be doing a good job....that way they keep their customers and their business.

thanks for that, there just seems to be ALOT of people offering hair extensions in my area and most of them are not very good, all say they are the best, all say they use the best hair etc.

Really I just need to know what im looking for and what hair to ask for etc

Hi kelshah,

You are already on the right track researching and being critical as a you say the market is saturated with hair extension techs.
My tips would be to ensure the person you use is a fully qualified hairdresser and also qualified in hair extensions. You could always see a cerificate and make sure they are ensured)
See plenty of before and after pics , have a good look if on a website and if not in a one on one consultation with printed pics as some may use pics that are not there work. Look to see if you can see some returning customers.
also variations in work ie colours , hair lengths styles, extensions that are cut well.
If you can go for a recommendation from someone who already has them and has been wearing for at least one cycle of 3 months that is great as some extensions look grest in the first couple of weeks then awful.
Branded hair is best such as cinderella, balmain, racoon , bohyme remi also fantastic. Many may say quality remi hair but can be terrible hair.
A half head sounds like it would be a good start for you but there can also be a variation to how an extensionist applies a half head. On really fine hair i would keep a half head low on the head below the part of the bone that moves out on the head as above this can be seennon ver fine hair so have a really good discussion face to face in consultaion.
And talking of consultation do not feel pressured to decide there and then.
I know I have gone on a bit but have seen some appaling work , heard some shocking experiences and have corrected many a dodgy hair extensions fit.
But with all that when you find the right tech youll love the extensions x

Yes Siansy is right in all she says. It is a bit of a minefield out there. Would be great if someone on here could recommend.

Hi

Advice do not use balmain or Racoon the hair is very bad quality, and some hairdresser will charge you £750 for hair extensions when the hair only cost £80!!! which i know for an absolute fact!

There are tons of cowboys out there as with any trade, just make sure they are qualified that is the most important aspect of this.

I have had to remove many shocking hair extensions in the Yorkshire areas!!! I have successfully got them a refund from the cowboys that fitted them, as I really do despise these people  taking peoples money and destroying their hair in the process. Hair extensions are supposed to give women more confidence not destroy it!! :irked:

Thank you sooo much for this advice, it really is hard to find someone good, im fed up of seeing clients with crappy extensions telling me to go to where they had theirs done. Whoever I find will gain alot of clients as i do get asked alot if i know anyone thats good alot of my clients are in cheshire and spend alot of money on how they look.

Also I know that some hair cannot be curled or straightened etc but dont know what it is.

Will be doing plenty of research before i have them put in but that was a great start especially knowing not to shell out for a full head that are going to be seen.

You are right there are alot of cowboys and I know they wont be cheap to get someone that is good. what is the diff in micro rings and other types etc? is there any i should avoid or that are particularly good for fine hair? x

I use resin bonds as it gives me complete control over the size of bonds that I make. On fine hair, a good technician will make tiny extensions, but lots of them. This ensures that there is no stress on your natural hair, and that the ext fit in well on fine hair and don't show.
While I never divulge who my hair supplier is, as you are caucasian, you should have European hair fitted. Remi, Asian, Chinese, etc will stick out like a sore thumb on fine, English hair. Good hair at 18 inch blonde should cost around £200 plus fitting.
Microrings can show on blonde hair, so I wouldnt rec.

I cannot stress how important I feel it is to only use a qualified hairdresser for this, preferably one who specialises in ext. When you have fine, coloured hair, you need the best you can afford.

Thanks persianista, that helps me too. I totally agree with the saying of buy cheap buy twice too. I was hoping to find someone that provides the best hair for me.

Do you reccommend cinderella at all? I spoke to a lady who does them at her salon and she said it would probably cost approx £400 for hair and fitting for half a head.

Im going to try a shop tomorrow who specialise in hair extensions - pretty much all they do, its called newimage in manchester, does anyone know if they have a good reputation at all.

thanks

Hi Kelshah

Balmain hair extensions for £80??? In that case they were NOT Balmian...not sure where you are buying Balmain at that price, unless of course your buying just a few strands?
