Hello Pro's. My name is Danielle and i live in East Tennessee. I am 27 years old and a stay at home mom of two boys 3 months and 4 years old. I have always thought nails tobe pretty cool and lately....I have had a desire to learn them. I had my son 3 months ago and my hubby gave me some cash to get my hair and nails done. I had one hell of a time finding a solon in East tennessee here that did tips!!!! it was all natural salons. Then my sister from FL called me up and said she just had her nails done and they did some colored acrylic on her and she was amazed. She said in FL there arent enough techs to filll the needs of the clients wanting this process. SO I have a few questions if you would not mind answering them for me I would greatly appreciate it.

--How long is nail school?
--Roughly how much does it cost?
--Do you need to work in a salon after you are licensed for x amount of hours or can you just go on your own if you want and can?
--How do you lean to do things like colored acrylics? I assume the schools don'tr teach you this and you need to find like secondary education to learn this technique.
-- How do you find good specialty technique classes then?
--If you are not artistic ( I cant draw a stick figure...my 3rd grade teacher called a parent teacher conference because she thought that I was obsessed with drawing ****s and I was mearly drawing SHOULDERS..LOL) Can you still do designs on these colored acrylics?
--My sister said this nail gal told her that if she finds a picture or design she likes.. she could print it on the computer as small as will fit on a nail and she can lay it in the nail?????? Is that true?

well im sure i will have more but this should get me started. I live close to Knoxville Tennessee but I highly doubt any specialty classes or seminars go on there.

=How long is nail school? It depends for each state...the schools go by hours...here in Florida, the hours are 260

=Roughly how much does it cost? The cost varies per school

=Do you need to work in a salon after you are licensed for x amount of hours or can you just go on your own if you want and can? You can work in a salon after you pass the state board test and get your license...but there are a WHOLE lot of UNLICENCESED nail techs working in shops.:irked:

=How do you lean to do things like colored acrylics? I assume the schools don't teach you this and you need to find like secondary education to learn this technique. Some schools teach colored acrylics, 3-D, Nail Art, etc. but you have to apply yourself and get secondary training or asked the experts here on the forum:hug:

=How do you find good specialty technique classes then? Ask the Nail Techs in you area if they know of any specialty classes.

=If you are not artistic ( I cant draw a stick figure...my 3rd grade teacher called a parent teacher conference because she thought that I was obsessed with drawing ****s and I was mearly drawing SHOULDERS..LOL) Can you still do designs on these colored acrylics? You can learn basic nail art...it can be rhinestone designs instead of handpainted designs...you just have to practice.

=My sister said this nail gal told her that if she finds a picture or design she likes.. she could print it on the computer as small as will fit on a nail and she can lay it in the nail?????? Is that true? Yes that is true...I put photos on nails all the time.

What city does your sister live in Florida?

Thanks!!!! Thanks for the info. We are from Fort Myers, FL. My sister and I lived in Lehigh. She still does but now I am in tennessee. I think her nail gal works in Fort Myers. Are you from around that area? I found out in TN it's 600 hours and classes are like 2645.00 but that is for design too I guess.

Hi Aspiring. :)

I'm in WA state, and we have a requirement of 600 hours as well. And it costs around $2800. Once you get your license, you can be an employee or a booth renter, or a mobile tech, or work from home (depending on the laws of your state, and if you have additional licenses for each.).

You'd be lucky to get a day or two of nail art in nail school, let alone colored acrylic or gel, but you never know. If you train with a system that has colors, they might let you play with it a bit. But the best place to get that kind of training is in a continuing ed class. And you can pick up great tips and tricks in forums like this one. :)

The best thing to do is contact the Department of Commerce and Insurance here in Tennessee. You can find it on the web. I know there are several schools here in Knoxville but there may be one closer to you. Once you get your liscence you can work wherever you wish. TN. does not have an apprenticeship program nor do they require continuing education to maintain your liscence. I would HIGHLY recommend taking some continuing education classes after you finish school or during if you are able to. We sometimes have classes in Knoxville and Ashville, NC which would not be a bad drive for you. Once you are enrolled in school you will be eligible to attend those.
I wish you the best of luck. Kepp us posted as to your decision.
