Hi Geeks, have just done a one week intensive nail tech course covering acrylic, gels, silk, fibreglass and mani's.

I popped a question on here last night about a friend who I'm doing L+P on this weekend who is a nail biter and asked for advice on how best to treat her. A reply came back suggesting that I go onto a course that would cover all of these kinda circumstances and how to deal with them.

Obviously I want to offer my clients the best solution for their nail type and get the best result possible, but I'm unsure of where I can find these courses and what they may be called. Can anyone help?

I trained with Salon Systems and will email my educator (in Attleborough, Norfolk) to see if she offers any 1:1 training or knows of what I can do. I think this kind of stuff needs to be taught to me rather than find out through trial and error! My only hold back at the mo is that I'm 8 months preggas with a 14 month old too, so travelling a distance is out of the pic at the mo! LOL

How could anyone be expected to teach you all that on a 5 day course which is also covering 3 systems and manicure?? .. That is just not being realistic at all.

I think you have had what I call a taster course (which is a mere introduction to what is on offer .. not serious training in nail technology) and you have not had enough training to be remotely qualified to tackle problem nail conditions. It's like asking an intern in medicine to perform brain surgery!

Your practice should be on 'normal' type nails not on the hardest condition to treat. And your next move should be to do a serious foundation class in one of those systems you were merely introduced to briefly on a 5 day course.

Everyone has to start somewhere ... but education is on going and life long and you have only put your foot towards the first rung of the ladder and not even stepped on it yet. If you had, and were fully qualified, you would not be in panic over doing bitten nails so my advice is to find some serious training that will take you further and prepare you for working in the industry. There is plenty of information here to help you in making a god choice.

You sound to be tackling allot at once and you will soon have your hands full so take it slowly and when you've had your baby, rather than taking anything near to you that is convenient, look a little further afield for training that will really aid you in growing your business. www.sweetsquared.com

Thanks for the advice, although I didn't expect to know everything in 1 week! LOL.

My plan is to practise on friends and family whilst on maternity leave and as long as I feel confident enough, to go it alone next Spring. I'll only charge them enough to cover my costs etc as the experience and practise is worth a hell of a lot more to me! Hopefully I'll be able to do a foundation course in the meantime, but financially it won't be this side of Christmas (unless I win the lottery!).

It is a bit scary that some girls feel that they are able to go off alone after a 1 week course. I don't feel anywhere near confident to give the best service possible yet - I want to know the solutions to any problem that I come across to be a happy Tecchy.

Will get in touch with CND and ask for some course info. Thanks again!

Hi, I am on the 5 day liquid and powder course ran by CND. I still have one day left to do. It has been fantastic and I really recommend it. There is so much to it and a lot to learn. I can't believe they can do all those systems on a 5 day course! Have you qualified and got your insurance? It's just 5 days of the one system and that's just scatched the surface, there is still so much more to learn. I hope you manage to get another course, it really will be worth it.

Congrats on the baby too, I'm currently pregnant with no 4! I love being kept busy though!!

Hi Faye, thanks for your congrats - right back at ya! LOL - Wow baby number 4 - this is number 2 for us (our baby boy is 14 months, so it'll be a bit crazy for a while). I like to be busy too, but am now worried after reading the replies on here that I've bitten off more than I can chew with the change of career. I hope I haven't wasted our money on the course I have done already.

My assessment is on Aug 29 and fingers crossed I'll pass, then I'll get my insurance through Babtac.

What was the name of the L+P course you did with CND and how much was it please? I think I may have to choose a system which I prefer to specialise in for the time being and do an in depth course on that, then do another, and another etc. I think my problem is that I'm trying to run before I can walk and need to remember that Rome wasn't built in a day!

Just a quick question too - how / when do you find the time to practice? Have you got a Nail Trainer hand or are you practising on friends and family? I'm having issues with this at the moment and am stressing that not enough practice will = failure of my assessment!

Anyway, off to use my nail trainer for the first time now - fingers crossed it'll be helpful! I need it!
