I am currently studying (nothing to do with beauty) at university, but I really do not feel that it's for me. However, I am very much interested in becoming a nail technician. I am not too sure what the best way is to go about this.

I have emailed companies like OPI and CND about their training, and they both sent me brochures with information on what they do and prices etc. Obviously, cost will be a major issue for me.

I live in Birmingham, and am also aware of The Beauty Academy, which is in Birmingham.

Could I please have some advice on places near me where I could get the training I need? I would really appreciate it.

Thank you.

Ez Flow do training in Kidderminster if that's any good. In fact they have training this weekend!

Hello!

I'm currently in the same position as you, really not liking my job i'm in at the moment and desperate to change my career and into something i've always wanted to do!

Anyway i'm in Birmingham too and I know there is an LCN Training Centre in Sutton Coldfield if you know the area? And they have training regularly and they don't require a certificate in Mani/Pedi. I was originally going to train with them but I've decided to train with Bio Sculpture instead as they offered a manicure certificate and there Gel is amazing and heard great things about their training etc. It is quite pricey though but IMO you pay for what you get. There nearest training centre is Leicester about an hour from Birmingham and i'm due to start training next weekend! VERY excited:green:.

I'm not too clued up on any other Gels ATM so cant tell you about them. Although i think OPI may train in Tamworth but i'm not 100% so correct me if im wrong!

Anyway if you need anymore information etc let me know! Good Luck :)

xxs

Izabelle Hammon also offer Calgel training in Leicester, and most reputable companies offer either group or 1-2-1 training pretty much everywhere... but you need to first look at which system(s) you want to start with & what there is most demand for in your area. I specialise in silk wraps, which has enabled me to set up a prestige service & offer something a bit 'different' - but that is to fit in with the clientele in my area, who mostly want strong, natural-looking nails, and to have their 'own' nails, rather than extensions (it is for this reason that I also introduced Shellac this year).

Then, it is true what they say: you get what you pay for. I've been in the industry for around 8 years, and started out with a full mani/pedi qualification, including all the anatomy & physiology etc, but if I were looking to start from scratch now, CND would definitely be at the top of my list. It may seem like a lot of money, but they seem to be very generous with the kit they include (after I trained, I had to spend a small fortune on more kit, as the tiny bit that came with the training was nowhere near enough to start out with), offer you very in-depth training, and a qualification that will instantly set you apart from other techs (& there are a LOT of us) with both future employers & clients. They will also support you ongoing, with further training & support & marketing materials.

What I would say though, is that it takes time. Lots of time, to train and get it right, AND to get clients & actually start making any money! & yes, it IS expensive. But try to do it cheaply/quickly & cut corners & 1 of 2 things (or both!) is likely to happen... you will fail, or you will have to pay to retrain! Sorry if I sound blunt at all, I absolutely LOVE this job, but I think most of us would rather receive honest advice from those in the know, than someone just telling us what they think we want to hear. Whichever route you choose, I hope it works for you.

Thank you so much for the advice! Extremely helpful. I had planned to go shopping today in Sutton Coldfield anyway, so I also went to check out the LCN Training Centre there. It's being refurbished atm, but they gave me the contact details of the woman I need, so I will give her a call on Monday.

I will do some research on both of the places you recommended.

Thank you again

Do you know if CND has anything in Birmingham? I can't see anything about Birmingham on their website, but they have Birmingham as one of the locations on the map in the little brochure they sent me. So I'm kind of confused. Regardless, I will definitely contact then to find out more.

What do you mean by 'cheaply/quickly'? Do you mean that it's best to start off with the best place you can than to go to a kind of rubbish place and then have to pay more money to go to the better place?

And you did not sound blunt AT ALL. It is advice that I asked for, and I need to hear the realities of it all, not some sugarcoated stuff. So I really really appreciate it.

Thank you! :)

I don't think they have an academy there, but they have educators all over. Best thing to do is to call Sweet Squared.

Yes, I mean if you go for the cheapest course, the cheapest products or the course that sees you 'qualified' in a day, you will likely regret it & have to pay again to retrain!

You're welcome. That's what we're here for.

Check out the courses for Nubar its a new upcoming brand and they do training near to you, have a look at their website and see what you think.

Up To Scratch : I will definitely call Sweet Squared to enquire about CND. Have you heard much about how OPI's training is? Also, how long do you think it a good length of time to be training? You say those one-day training courses aren't going to be good enough. So what would you recommend, please?

Master30 : Thank you. I will look into Nubar.

I had an email from EZ Flow today and they have a new training venue at Birmingham. I'm not sure where it is but you can always give them a ring. EZ Flow is one of the top companies and their training is excellent.

Thanks for letting me know! I am going to be contacting a few companies tomorrow, so hopefully, I can narrow down my search
