Hello,

This is my first year of trading as a sole trader, and I have a query re: paying for babysitting. Are you allowed to put the cost of babysitting while working down as an expense or not?

Elaine

You would be able put childcare costs on your books but I am unsure if you could do this without it being a registered childminder or nursery etc..

I know that it has to be a registered person or company if your claiming through the child tax credits so would expect there to be similar 'rules' that need to be met to put it on your books, the best thing to do is ring the HMRC line and ask them for advice about the situation.

Thank you, yep I probably need a long conversation with the HMRC. Thank you.

Hi there,

When I first set up I asked my accountant the same question, and she said no. I guess it depends on your accountant? Good luck! X:D

No, because that is an expense you would have whether you were self employed or employed.
