Hello I'm new here and loving the site so far!! everyone is so helpful and great to get so much advice xxx i have another thread about getting into the beauty industry, so im sorry if this is the wrong place to start this post! I was just wondering if anyone had done short beauty courses, and if they could recommend a good academy/beauty school etc. I work f/t and my plan is to do a full level 2 then level 3 in beauty (p/t around my f/t work and family), and the hopefully specialise more in complimentary therapies. However to ease into it, i was thinking about doing a course on eye treatments, such as threading, eyelashes etc and maybe a nails course. I have seen some courses with British beauty academy, but not sure if one day course on threading is enough? Judging by the descritpion it seems to be a lot of material to go thrugh in just one day? Sorry for the long post but would be really grateful for any advice on this as i do not know anyone personally who has done them! thanks so much xxx

Any advice on courses would be very much appreciated x I'm looking to become a mobile therapist x

I started with nails, I use CND. Have a look at sweetsquared website to see some info and products they use.
I love the shellac power polish and this is my busiest treatment, would recommend it to anyone! Also as it means painting nails alot you will get good practice at painting dark/bright colours and French manicures x

must admit I do think you should start with at least an NVQ2 before taking seperate courses, thats what i did and it greatly helped me having that background. Lots of courses also want you to have some kind of background already to do a quick course e.g for my spray tanning course i had to have a background and qualification in skincare.

However, you could start your NVQ2 and take courses throughout it?

Anyway....all my seperate courses have been with The Carlton Institute of Beauty and they are excellent. Halls of Ivy in Essex are also very good, google them both x

I have taken evening courses at college for beauty before - nq eye care and nq nail care both 1 evening a week for 12 weeks and have done some 1 day courses too - i do not have a level 2 in beauty but I just wanted to take courses as it's something I am interested in and wanted to see if I would enjoy it first! lol so you could try looking at colleges and maybe wholesalers who run short courses too?? Salon Services Training Prospectus 2011 and Training Courses - Hair, Beauty, Holistic and Nail courses

I really wouldn't go with the British Beauty Academy hun. I was going to use them and it seemed like they just wanted my money and got a bit annoyed when I asked about course content. Even when I rang they just said 'hello?' and I had to ask them if I had the right number, not good. I'd recommend Halls of Ivy or the Beauty Academy. X

I have done lots of one day courses. Some have been great but others not quite so. You leave there with a qualification yet may have only say tinted one eyebrow. I felt that short courses where good for me being a mature er very mature student. But I wish I'd now done an nvq or similar and then done the fast track courses.

If you are going to be working on your own it can be lonely but if you are determined and motivated you can do anything. This place is brilliant for support and advice.
X

after researching for a couple months, I think I will do the NVQ2 course rather than lots of little courses.... think I've settled on the nvq2 beauty therapist course with the Carlton Institute? Will then save to do further courses when I see what interests me most! HAs anyone else does anything similar? Hoping to start working p/t alongside my f/t job and hopefully move on from there x

Hi camile, yeah I have done exactly the same as you, I am currently in my second year p/t at college studying for nvq 2. It's the best thing I have ever done, would never look back. I'm also working full time, it's a bit tiring but I don't regret it and u get used to it. I have also done a couple of day courses in spray tanning and eyelash extensions but I think I will wait till I have finished the course before I do any more. Let me know how u get on x

Ahh Thx zoe I ordered the nvq2 book, it looks daunting but excited about it at the same time! Got to wait till I have a bit more money,
Probate ly goons book the course for march/April, can't wait xxx

Thanks for all the advice so far ladies!!! Got my NVQ2 book, there is so much to consider so think I will def do my Level 2 first rather than short courses, may start to do some little courses once I've done the level 2!

after researching I thought I had settled on the Carlton Institute for the beauty therapy NVQ2 at Windsor, but then read some bad reviews about their nails courses at Windsor.

Wondered if anyone had been on any of the courses below? Any feedback would be very much appreciated:

# The Carlton Institute at Windsor (5 days tuition then home study and assessments)
# The London School of Beauty & Makeup via Open Beauty Learning Programme
# London College of Beauty Therapy
# Saks Beauty (v.expensive approx £XXX)
# local further education college, x2 evenings pr week p/t, but doesn't start till next September
# Isis Beauty Academy in Walton

Gosh I'm confused!! def want to do nvq2 to give me a solid grounding in the industry, just don't know what to go for!!!

xxx

I did my courses at Carlton. They were one day short courses which you got a certificate for there and then. If you wanted an NVQ then you had to go away and do case studies send it to them then go back and take a test. The training itself was still 1 day for each subject.

Anyway....all my seperate courses have been with The Carlton Institute of Beauty and they are excellent. Halls of Ivy in Essex are also very good, google them both x

Hiya Nietta can I ask, did you do the NVQ2 at Carlton Institute recently? I just got a bit worried as I saw a few bad reviews about their nails courses based at Windsor

Thanks hun x

After tons of research, just thought I'd update you! It may help someone else in my situation!

Have decided to do full NVQ2, going to go to Isis Beauty academy in Walton, one of the only places which encouraged me for a visit, while other girls were actually in attendance, had a lovely interview with the Principal, she answered all my questions and gave me so much information, met some of the tutors and some of the girls on the course who were doing the friday/saturday p/t route. Got to see their training area (very clean and spacious, they have small classes), some of the work produced by the other students (e.g. nail art boards and NVQ folders) etc, I was really impressed. Course is about average price for what I have seen around, but it seems that by doing the course over 8 months, every wednesday night (with normal term time breaks) i will have time to actually learn while studying for the NVQ at the same time. I'm going to pay my deposit next month and hopefully start at the end of April, I should be done by December! Can't wait!!

Hi there Camille, just seen you post about the Carlton Institute I was also looking at studying there on their NVQ level 2 beauty course, up at Exmouth yet after seeing a few bad reviews have delayed in booking, I'm down in Cornwall and there are few colleges around that do this course, is there any reviews about the Exmouth site around? Any other courses you could recommend ladies? Charlotte xxx
