I'm currently in the process of setting up two salons and a couple of kiosks. I'm having to get "Sui Generis" use for both of them, but because it's not a hairdressers, it doesn't qualify for A1 use. Has anyone else had this problem?

My mrs is in the process of waiting for planning permission to open up a beauty salon, as the shop use is currently A1 and needs planning permission for change of use. This process can take up to 8 weeks apparently. Also our council charged us about £300 fee, whether or not it gets approved before our application can be processed. But as long as the previous use of shop you are renting is not going to affect the community, then you should be ok. This means say if the shop used to be a chemist and there isn't a chemist on that street, then you need to to argue why the change of use will not affect the locals in the area. So Basically as long as there are enough A1's and A2's ect, and not loads of sui generis's, then all should be ok.

Sui Generis - Theatres, houses in multiple paying occupation, hostels providing no significant element of care, scrap yards. Petrol filling stations and shops selling and/or displaying motor vehicles. Retail warehouse clubs, nightclubs, launderettes, dry cleaners, taxi businesses, amusement centres and casino's.

Basically from my understanding, it is buildings that need to operate large machinery and are need special attention with health and safety.

Hope this helps.

Thanks,

Matt

Also, Hairdressing is classed as A1. Nails, Tanning Booths, Massage ect. are all classed as Sui Generis. Basically they dont know what shop use the named treatments above belong to, so thats why they are in this category. My council have said that if you want to do hairdressing and Beauty under A1 use, then it needs to be 90% hairdressing and 10% Beauty. Otherwise as mentioned earlier, you need to change the use to Sui Generis and put in planning permission.

Hope this indeed does answer your question. Its quiet long winded.

Thanks,

Matt

My premises was A1 Retail but in Greenwich Borough Beauty salon hasn't got its own use, Im not sure what other councils class it as but I had to change the use to Sui Generis, took a long time as well, they kept sending my applications back, they must of sent it back about 4 times saying something was incorrect and they wouldn't help me work out what was incorrect. Nightmare! Got sorted in the end though and they granted permission but with some conditions of opening times x

I had to get my salon changed. It was originally A1 Retail but was changed to Sui Generis for me to do nails, but luckily only had to wait 6 weeks for it to be ok.

So, vanitybeauty1 what was initially wrong with your planning permission, if you dont mind me asking. Am patiently waiting to hear back for mine. :)
