I have had a client with severe nail biting as well and the experience was upsetting at the time, but taught me a lot in the long run for future nail biters.
It was hard to work with her, as her nails and fingers were very sore, and so were her cuticles. Also she had loads of white spots on her nails. I tried my best and used clear tips as well. At the moment I didn´t have a very opaque pink gel, so I had to go with one that did not quite do the make-up work, so there were still some spots visible.
One problem I faced, too, was that even when I cut the contact area very short, the tip itself would almost cover her nail. Ans as we know, this is no good because the whole nail stayed on pretty much by the adhesive, not the gel. I made the nails a lot shorter than what she would´ve wanted but explained why that was the best thing for her at the moment.
I warned her about the longevity (or the lack of it) of the enhancements, gave her all advice to take home with her and how to take care of the enhancements. And hoped for the best.
So, one week later she came back to me. She had lost 3 tips already. This didn´t surprise me but I did fix them for her for free as I felt like a complete loser...
She had not followed my instructions so there was no improvement nowhere to be seen, no cuticle oil using, no nothing.
We discussed about it and she promised to trys and take care of them more. We also agreed that a rebalance should be done in a week or two, so I could see if her nails had started to grow and if she had tried to at least use the oil.
She never came back.
My point here was not to upset you, but to tell you that these clients are very hard to work with and many seem to expect miracles and super-long nails that will fix everything and need no more attention, when they walk out of the salon.
Also another point was, that I too used tips, and now am starting to think that maybe sculpting could be a bit more strong, even though it is hard (especially for me) to perform on a very short and damaged nail.
I wish you all the best and good luck with your client - I sure hope she is a bit more willing to take care of her new enhancements. Because it really takes only a few weeks, and the nails will have grown daramically! And if the client really understands the importance of cuticle oil and being careful etc, their nails will be fabulous in no time.
I am living proof of that myself, as I have always been a nail biter - and look at them now! It may take time, it may take more care and it sure takes some willingness, but nails biters can end up having gorgeous and lasting enhancements, too.
