Not too sure if this is the right place to ask, sorry if it's not! I qualified two years ago in make-up artistry and have spent the last year and a half testing and with photographers - all going great. Then in the last couple of months I decided to enter into the wedding industry to make a bit more money and so far I have done two bridal trials - one who's fiance attended to trial ( as he did not like her to wear much make-up) then went on to have her friend do her make-up and copy exactly what I did for her wedding make-up!

My second trial ( I have been booked for the wedding) the bride's fiance did not like her to wear much make-up either and he had to give his approval! Is this usual!? I feel my confidence been knocked a little bit doing bridal, which I never felt working on shoots with these critiquing fiances! Maybe I'm not cut out for the bridal industry :(

Can anyone offer some advice for me going forward? I would also like to know from make-up geeks would you get a wedding booking from most trials that you do?

Just from a man's point of view who's getting married pretty soon (July 2017 - coming round fast!), I doubt this is normal. I know 'some' men may go to things like that but it sounds pretty controlling type of partner from what you've described, to be honest. My fiancee has booked her trial and for the day from the same person already in one go. Also for bridesmaids etc. In my opinion, it's up to the bride to be to decide how she wants her dress, hair, makeup etc. not really any of my business as she will look beautiful no matter what she decides :)

Yes : I specialise in bridal and my RULE is NO fiancée or family allowed. Bride and me for a consultation. If they bring friends they sit in the waiting area, no cameras allowed , no friends fiddling through my make up kit , no kids . End of story if you don't like my rules the. Bugger off find someone else.
If you don't book me for wedding the trial price is X amount. In the past I made mistakes of doing cheaper trial price to what I charge for actual evening make up and it takes twice as long. So I now charge the same.

Ask clients to bring pictures and have idea what they want BRFORE the trial. I won't sit half hour to 50min going through Instagram pictures WITH the bride to help her choose what do you think questions! My time and That is what their bridesmaids are for.

A chick who so overly concerned about if her fiancé likes the make up is not worth marrying to be honest: welcome to your future cupcake! He be feeling you how to tie you hair and wipe your arse soon if this how he bloody behaves at the beginning.
Logic tell you photographs taken at weddings so you need make up lips etc more to pop but ofcourse what would we know compared to a man !

Oh one more tip:
Make sure very thing is water prof bcoz every flipping bride and her mother while walking down isle or just before start wailing like their puppy had died and F@&£ up their make up ever single time!! Or some Inconsiderate bridesmaid shows them a post on FB of their dead granny or parent saying they so happy wish they here or someth ring and BOOM their eyes you took half hour doing smudged nose red blowing nose wiping eyes . Bloody disaster !

Tell them to TAKE rescue tablets the week before and I don't if they don't drink have a freaking shooter of brandy or tequila while or before doing make up. Best tip for calm nerves ever I don't care what your opinion is but this works!
So I use Mac pot paints for the entire look and gel liner and water proof mascara and now liquid lipsticks which don't come off. If they stuff their make up after this then their own fault.

I charge £90 for a wedding make up. At the trial they pay £50 whether they book me for their wedding or not. I did a bride and big wedding party on Friday and the groom who is also a client, told me not to put too much make up on his bride to be. I laughed. We'd had a trial and she looked fab.

Good luck x

Jesus, you sound like a barrel of laughs to be around on a bride's big day.
I know it must be a nightmare to have a crying bride but that's pretty normal surely.

Hahah ya I use sarcasm and make most ppl laugh in all circles I think it eases tension. But ya I found my Mac pot paint works the best hey!
New make up graduates usually don't know about the crying part and I seen many new make up artists flat out go into pannick mode and I assure you of their make up looks rubbish in photos they will be telling everyone and will forget to mention that they were balling their eyes out and having every granny kissing their cheeks and rubbing her own foundation off !

I once was a matron honour to my bestie and her old fat aunt who in my opinion should be shot ! Arrived late like we walking down garden to start music she flipping comes out her car , "waddling down like Jemima puddle duck" and taking pictures and kisses her with RED efffing lipstick TWICE on on her face!!! I screamed and completely flipped out !! Saying stop touching the bride go away and managed to selvage most her make up.
Firstly it's rude to come late secondly rude to stop bride as she starting her procession walk thirdly it's rude to try take pictures and lift her veil to kiss her fourthly it's rude to leave red kiss marks all over her face !!! I nearly murdered her !!!

Bridal make is not to sissies but it's still my favourite job as I enjoy the excitement and buzz and I love the whole atmosphere ! Most cases I even dress the bride (so learn how to do that!) as bridesmaids land up shaking have no clue how the dress even laces or goes on and bride suddenly looses her brain functions and can't remember how it goes on !
*make bride go to toilet first , *stand on chair , *hold dress up, *get bridesmaids hold the sides and *have bride stand under dress, *lifting arms upward, *gentle drop dress making sure hair make up is not ruined .
simple.

Good luck

Thanks everyone for your replies! Just thought it was a bit strange having two brides in a row like that. Great to have a male perspective too! I'll try the pictures tip, I suppose everyone has different ideas of what 'natural' or 'smokey eyes' are. I am also going to put a note on my website about other people, I work from a small area anyway so I'll say it's health and safety!

Weddings bring out the worst in people! I've never had the fiance wanting to sit in, that's a new one on me! But I've got some funny stories about wedding days and 'melt downs' - I don't do them any more, found the whole thing far too difficult.

I totally agree with nailpod - got to get all your rules and procedures in place so people don't walk all over you.

I stopped doing weddings when the rudeness seemed to become the standard! I make as much money doing treatments for the people going to the wedding.

I was discussing doing weddings with my hairdresser the other day. Their salon also don't do weddings anymore. If asked, their reply is £1000 for the day.
Made me laugh... Perfect answer!!
