Thought I would start this thread for us BTec geeks to talk about our experiences on the course, and perhaps help geeks who are currently studying for it.

There seems to be a lot of NVQ geeks here, and the NVQ's do differ from BTec, so here we go!

I finished my BTec course last year at Lincoln College - loved every second of it!

finished up with DMM (IVA let me down or I would have been straight DDD)

how about you? :)

come on btec geeks surely theres not just me here! It's important to raise the profile of this course otherwise salon owners will end up thinking we are a pre-requisite for NVQ!!!

(NOT slating NVQ at all here, its just true that SOME employers really do think BTec is a short course you take before you can enroll on NVQ!!)

Hi there!

Could you tell me more about the BTec please? i.e. how it differs to the NVQ. havent really seen anything about the BTec. When I search for training I always end up looking on sites that offer NVQs...

I was sort of under the impression that the BTec had ceased to exist/had been replaced by the NVQ but from what you have said thats not correct???

have emailed you hun :)

BTec is very much alive and kicking!

come on geeks am I really the only BTec trained geek here??

am bumping this up in the hope I am not the only btec trained geek on here! lol!

my make up artist course is a btec the college iam at changed it from an NVQ to BTEC because they said it was a more recognised in the industry.

so whats the diffrence with an ITEC? i got mine a few years back now. its just internationally recognised rather than british? am i totally wrong? lol

my feeling is that BTec is far less recognised in this country than NVQ - when looking for work experience I had seasoned, established salon owners telling me they had never heard of BTec Nat Dip in Beauty Therapy Sciences, and was I 'special needs'????
I don't know much about the ITEC course, sorry.

But I am unofficially declaring myself the BTec geek so if anyone has any q's about the course, grading criteria, IVA or anything at all please ask!

helllooo!

sorry i am several months late to this thread!
I also did a BTEC in applied sciences -beauty therapy and i totally agree that the BTEC has less status..but its a higher qualification!!..as you would normally do a NVQ2 the progress to NVQ 3, where a BTEC is already set at the higher level! But i have found this unusual qualifcation more of a help than a hinderance!..because not many other people seem to have it in the country, so that puts me ahead of others, well in the education sector it does. But out in industry i think it is less recognised, but i definatly feel we will be sticking to the NVQ route, as its slightly easier than the BTEC! Oh well!,, i'll stop my ramble now!

Many years ago when I was a wee lad(!), I did the BTEC National for one year but got bored & so went onto the Higher National Diploma. I have friends who are on NVQ's & to be honest I was suprised at how short they are & how little theory & so forth is involved. I had to do 5 days a week for two years, and they were whole days, not these little half days they seem to do now! On top of that, one of the days was a 'salon day' where we did treatments from 9.30 till 5.00 on members of the public, thus ensuring we had plenty of supervised experience.
