Tweeting just got sweeter following the launch of a new mobile video service by Twitter. Called Vine, the application allows salons and therapists with Twitter accounts to create and share looping videos with clients and their team. "The potential for the beauty industry is huge", says social network specialist Valorie Reavis (pictured) of Linkup Marketing

"Vine is a separate application that is free to download," explained Valorie, founder of Linkup Marketing and creator of The Shout Lounge, an innovative social media management tool for salons. "The option to include video, even as brief as six seconds, is very exciting for our creative, visual industry. I can see therapists posting snapshot films of make-up looks they’ve created; nail technicians displaying nails of wonder and even video podcasts by the team to show what hair trends are big."

In 2012, the six-year-old social network hit more than 500 million registered users, sending out 1 billion tweets every 2.5 days, defying predictions that it was a network solely for the younger generation. With integrations across popular image-based services like Pinterest and Instagram, Twitter’s move to video is an expansion of its already thriving multi-media potential. Vine is currently available to iPhone and Android users.

"Twitter pioneered important social inventions, like the hashtag, which have become an integral part of many new social networks," added Reavis. "The popularity and volume of the content being regularly posted on Twitter demonstrate that users, especially in our industry, are connected to topics that lend themselves to photos and videos. Looking at the top trends in 2012, it’s obvious that video was a logical step for Twitter in some form. The question is: what will your salon post in your six second video?"

Until then...geek on!
