don't even know if this is posted in the right bit as I'm new! Would love to hear off anyone with any info on working as a hairdresser on the cruise ships, the interview and thing like that, I would love to do it but have heard some really bad reviews as well as some really good ones.

haven't got a clue how you would go about this but it would be fab. Best of luck x

i might be able to get some info for you at college, there was a presentation a few months ago by a cruise company recruiting stylists/therapists. i'll ask the staff this week for you lovie xxx

I had an interview to be a hair stylist on board with steiner cruises and i failed misberly but thats because i didnt have enough experience behind me!

You have to be pretty much perfect at what you do, no room for tiny mistakes!
You have a big meeting first where they go through the pay, where you'll be living etc. then if you pass the interview they then train you up to their standards which is a good thing!

Your pay is around 50% commission (although americans tip big, $100-200 dollars per treatment) you only have one day off a week and that could only be a half day! I'm pretty sure you work 12 hours a day too And even on your half day they can get you to work as a hostess at the main entrance for guests going on/off the boat.
In your spare time you aren't allowed near the guests and to move around the boat you have to go along separate passageways to them! You arent allowed to get drunk and have to share a cabin with another member of staff (may not be a fellow stylist/therapist).

I'm pretty sure its 6 month On 3 month off although i cant remember! I've sometimes thought about applying again to be a nail technician but then i got into a serious relationship and couldnt leave my partner for so long!

But the life experience you'll gain from it you'll never forget it! If you have the confidence then go for it! x

Any more questions just ask :)

The info above is wrong.

I was on the ships with Steiner for 2 years and my advice is go for it! It's brilliant! Never looked back since. They reward the workers and shun the shirkers. If you're not frightened of hard work and longer hours, you can go very far! I became a manager on my first contract at the age of 19. Put in the graft and they reward you handsomely.

My friend was on the ships a d met her husband on there! It is hard work and you have to meet targets and standards that are set but she said it is an amazing experience vodka and coke £1 below deck to all staff what more can you ask for he he xx

Sounds fab!! ive heard so many mixed reviews! what does the interviews and trade tests involve? I really am a hard worker snd am used to doing long hour days! What is it that theyre really looking for? and how much experince not that it matters too much but ive heard off some people u can drink off duty and some say you can't, dunno if i could cope for 9 months without a drink haha!! xx

How have I never even heard of this?! Lol Omg i want to do this!!

Steiner came to my college and told us everything. But you really need to research before you decide it's what you wanna do

Cruise Ship Jobs

The Cruise Ship industry offers a wide range of jobs and can be financially attractive. A job on a cruise ship also enables you to travel around the world. Cruise ships are basically floating hotels. So job vacancies are similar to a big 5 star hotel, holiday park or fancy resort. Renewable 4 to 6 month contracts for cleaners, chefs, catering and bar staff, hospitality and front of house type roles are the norm. More than ever, there are vacancies for ex-casino staff, health and fitness instructors, beauty therapists and specialist childcare workers.

I did a trade test a few yrs ago I had to do an up do and blow dry one side of the head straight and the other side with volume???? I had an interview which was a few questions. They do like hair dressers to have level 3 Nvq but not sure if its essential! You have to pay some money out for a few things and you go down south for training and then go to your ship xx

In got the job!! :). Start training in October. If anyone wants any advice feel free to message me xx

Keep us updated love. That's great news congrats :)

I start training late September but for massage, what date do you head to the academy?

Hi there I worked on the ship 2 years back and to be honest as long as you go and realise its not a lot of money to be earned but a great experience. I think the full interview process is a jock for this reason, they full your head with the hope of going and earning a lot of money this is not true!!!!!!
You go to London for supposedly up to 4weeks training which you pay for,I was send to ship after 4 days as I was the most experience hairdresser there that wasn't hard most of them couldn't even hold a hairdryer!!!! When you go to London you have no clue where your going in the world and don't get back home,go straight to the airport from hostel to met the ship!!!
Then once you are there they tell you all the bad ****
You work from 7.45 in the morning till10pm at night
You have to pay $35 a day to stay on board
You get one day off a week
If you have no clients your running about getting printing done cleaning (which you don't get paid for may I add!!!!!)
All I can say is a had a **** time working as I earned £35 A WEEK
at first I hated it cried every night to sleep for the first 2week called home in a state but the people you met and become like a family helped me through it so i was going to try my best and stick it out.
I met the ship in Canada and when to Alaska then repositioned to Tampa to the Caribbean stuck it out for 6months then came home
I was 24 when I when to London and didn't read my contract which states all these bad bits in the small print (which I didn't bother to read before signing my life away lol)
Even till this day I don't regret it was the best experience iv ever had in my life been to places I would have never got to see met some amazing people along the way my only with that the company had been honest about your earning rather that make you believe there bull
All I remember from my interview was you could buy a car after 9months or have a deposed for a house..........I was sold straight away lol
This my friend is bull lol
But unfortunately my contract stated in the small print you basally don't have a leg to stand on even know I had paid for staying in London and getting training which I never got was send to ship to do foot and arm massage, teeth whitening,India head massage and more which I had never done before.
Sorry for the in depth detail hope it kind of helps a bit

Ps you can party like a rock star off duty lol well maybe not a rock star but I did lol
